To say the world was unprepared was an understatement, what was thought to just be a mild new virus similar to the common cold quickly spiralled out of control until millions of deaths were recorded. As soon as the 1 billion mark was reached the dead no longer remained that way, they reanimated themselves; standing up and walking as if nothing had happened. There was something wrong though, they weren't human anymore. Instead of getting up and going back to work or telling their loved ones they're alright they turned to the nearest living creature that wasn't a plant and sunk their teeth as far into it as they could before pulling back with the force of something unnatural and tearing apart the creature in front of them before it died or escaped.
It was like they were on some type of drug, completely unaware of their surroundings as soon as they locked onto a target, not even being shot seemed to bother them; like they couldn't even feel the bullet passing through their body. I watched on the Telly as every channel was interrupted with the news of news anchors or the government desperately trying to warn the population as outside nothing but screams and loud animalistic groans could be heard. Whatever they were now was devoid of all humanity, I watched from my Flat as they tried to eat anything they saw. Adults, kids, babies, pets, pests, it was all the same thing in its eyes; Food.
To say I was horrified was an understatement, but I had watched enough horror movies and slasher films I figured I could kick ass and look good while doing it. I was sorely mistaken, but I'd find that out soon enough. Deciding to play it smart I stayed in my flat as the worst of it pasted, after a couple of hours the original frenzy died down, now all that was in the streets were the undead. The rest of the day was eerily quiet. Perhaps many were smart like me and stayed inside, or were simply hermits like me and had nowhere to be during the first attack. At night is when they started to really get loud. The horrible sound of moans and growls echoed off every surface into my eardrums.
I desperately tried any form of entertainment to drown out the groans but the Telly signal was quickly knocked out. The wifi was next to go as well as data not seeming to work neither, just my luck was the power was out by 3 am. I could try to uphold a stoic demeanour but the truth was I was scared shitless, I had always been scared of ghosts and 3 am. My phone battery was the last to go, the last I saw on the screen was 4:15. What felt like hours have passed but the sun never seemed to move, night was always like this when I had no external stimulus to focus on. Just my luck, the apocalypse breaks out the week I run out of my medication for my ADHD; I haven't even set foot out of my Flat and I was already doubting my ability to survive.
Perhaps the lucky ones were the ones who were infected and died from the virus, or perhaps the lucky ones were the ones eaten with nothing remaining to reanimate. I certainly didn't feel like one of the lucky ones right now, did I have any luck on my own? Then again who would want me in their group, no one even wanted me to help in group projects barely worth any marks in grad school, why would I be wanted in their survival group? No, I'm better off alone, like always. Through my dissociation I had seemed to pass the time, by the time I had realized the sun was half way up and the constant groans have died down. I guess walkers weren't morning people either.
Per my luck I had been continuously forgetting to go for a trip to the shops. I suppose it was too late now, if they weren't cleared out they were flooded with walkers. So here I was, No food, no water, no medication, and a weak shelter to say the least. Did I even remember to lock the door last night? As if on cue shuffling and cries of monstrous hunger could be heard from outside in the flat hallway, I race to the door and enable the deadbolt and desperately hold my breath for as long as possible. How long has my door been unlocked? Regardless all I did as a futile attempt to protect myself was alert the predator outside of my presence, at least I hoped it was only one; the hallways echoed so badly I couldn't make out if it was one voice or twenty.
