I tried to be good. Then I got bored.
-unknown
"Enemies to lovers," I muttered while looking through the romance section of Barnes and Noble. Normally I stay far away from this particular section of romance, but my best friend tries to convince me to read the latest trends.
"Girl come on you have to try some of them at least. They're so good it isn't even funny. And the book boyfriends are to die for!" She threw herself down onto a beanbag nearby while dramatically putting the back of her hand to her head. "Seriously if I never find a boy like that I'm going to die a single Pringle."
"Ambi, we've discussed this, you are way too smart to die a single Pringle, you'd figure out an arranged marriage to some mafia boss if you had to." She looked at me with an exasperated expression as if to say "How dare you suggest such a thing"
"I. Would. Never. Wait, actually- where is he from? Is he tall? They have to be tall. Dark hair? light eyes? What are we talking about specifically"
"See! Case and point. And no he's a micro midget."
"Rude! I would never settle for a micro midget."
"You would if Elodie approved" I responded in a sing-song voice
Elodie was her daughter. They were both drop-dead gorgeous. Ambi had her in our second year of Uni making her almost two and Ambrosia nearly twenty-one.
"Maybe, but that's unlikely she has the same taste as her mum"
"Uh huh" I responded knowing she would do most anything to make sure Lo-Lo was healthy, happy, and safe. If it came down to it Ambi would marry anyone if it meant her daughter having a happy life.
"What do you think of this one?" I asked holding up a romance novel with an American football player and some skimpily dressed cheerleader, not my style but probably something she'd force down my throat. I may as well end my misery quickly.
"Yes!! That one is so good. I know the cover looks weird but it's a sunshine x bad boy and so cute"
I sigh and put it in the growing pile of books we'll be leaving the store with "You're going to make me go broke"
"As if books were ever something you cared about spending money on"
Crap, she had me there. I looked around trying to get out of this odd, but normal, form of torture. "Why...don't we.... Go get a coffee!" I almost ran into a bookshelf while thinking and abruptly turned around to face Ambi. I'll buy and we can get a rose-banana-coconut milk steamer for Lo-Lo. I could see she was thinking about it as much as she loved books coffee or a good tea was a weakness for both of us.
"Fine, fine but you're getting the books I, I mean, we pulled"
I rolled my eyes walking over to the pile of at least sixteen books and started grabbing them into my arms. Eventually, Ambi started stacking.
"Ambi?" I asked sweetly as we walked towards the checkout "Why are you not helping me carry this monstrous pile of books you are forcing me to buy?" Her response was almost instant.
"I am helping broaden your horizons of love, tranquility, hate, and peace. You should be honored. I have devoted my time to such a loss cause but alas" she sighed "it will be well worth it. Your payment is carrying them one book per five minutes I waste, I mean uh, lovingly give to your dilemma"
She sounded so distraught I almost believed her for a second. Then I remembered she was referring to me. "Wait just a moment! Ambrosia Darlene you take that back."
"Can't take back the truth."
"You didn't"
"I did."
"I'm telling Elodie you're being mean"
She let out an exasperated sound "You wouldn't dare."
"Watch me Darlene"
"That's not even my middle name!"
"Uhm? Ma'am's? Are you ready to check out or do you need a moment-?" We both stopped in our tracks I could feel my cheeks going red and noticed hers as doing the same. As a boy around nineteen looked at us skeptically he was probably wondering if we belonged in an insane asylum.
"Uh, no we're okay thank you for being patient with us," Ambi said in an attempt to make the situation less embarrassing.
"No problem, never an issue to wait for a pretty lady."He said while starting the scan the monstrous pile. When he finally finished I pulled out my card and gave it to him while Ambi went to order the coffees. Truthfully, money was never a concern when your father is a mafia don you don't have many concerns. Besides not being late, payment for tardiness is not something I wish upon any living creature. The kid started ringing up the books and I rolled my eyes at how slow he was. I mean honestly, I know it's a couple of books but come on. I pulled out my phone while I waited sending a text to my Training Officer asking if we still had training today. He responded with the usual attitude of, 'Why the hell wouldn't we.' I reacted to it with a heart and looked up at the boy, who was looking at me. "Is something wrong?"
"Uh, oh. No. No ma'am I just didn't know if that was all"
I squinted at him wondering if he was actually nervous "No. That's it." He seemed surprised at how my demeanor had shifted I wasn't, Ambi was probably the only person over the age of seven who saw anything but, well nothing, from me. He finished his job after another five minutes, honestly, this kid really needed to learn how to work out a cash register, and I walked over to Ambi.
"Card madam?" she asked as soon as I got there. I rolled my eyes at her antics and smiled handing her my debit card while I situated the books.
"Did you order already?" I asked slightly anxious to remove myself from the loud environment.
"I did! It should be ready in a bit. Oh! Here it is" we each grabbed our coffees and headed out of the store.
"Hey Am, I think I should go. You know how Jason gets when i'm late."
"Girl, you really need a new training officer you're a mafia princess for crying out loud why does he dictate your choices?"
"You know the answer to that Ambi" and she did. It was because my Father had decided that was the way it was. Interesting as I could order anyone to kill themselves and they would in a heartbeat. But not my T.O. Oh no, he has what I like to call "princess power" mainly cause he has power over me and well, it gets on his nerves.
"Okay, well I will call you later?" She asked?
"Of course talk to you in a bit love you." We hugged quickly, then parted ways. I practically had to run to my car so I wouldn't be late. A very awkward activity while holding roughly sixteen books mind you. I threw them in the back, gently because i'm not a monster. Ducked into the driver's seat and pulled out of my spot practically breaking every traffic violation in existence in the process.
"You're late." I cringed while walking in. I had in fact gotten to the building on time. I hadn't changed into my training clothes or put my hair up quickly enough to get to training on time.
"I apologize for my tardiness." I had learned that short straight-to-the-point answers were less likely to get me beat.
"Apology excepted. Next time I won't be so lenient. Let's begin."
