Back to the Basics

Start from the beginning

Mom and Mr. G agreed with Jay completely. This was the first time he had agreed with his son in a week.

After a brief moment of mumbling off something on my chart, Dr. Lockhart explained, "You are doing much, much better, Rae. This monitoring is to ensure you're adjusting well to the medicine, even in the real world. As you've already realized, things will be very different without your quirk."

My face grew warm as I looked down at the food in front of me, recalling what Jay had told me earlier: people could notice my movements because seconds were the default measure of time.

How the hell do people not need extra nanoseconds to process things?

The rest of the evening went uneventfully, except for Mom and Mr. Gonzales working to pack the things I didn't need to make tomorrow's discharge as easy as possible.

"Jayce, you gotta figure out what you're going to do with these flowers. She's got to be out of here by 9am tomorrow, and we can't overstay our welcome," Mr. Gonzales reminded plainly.

In between cleaning up the last bites of my Alfredo dinner, Jay nodded subtly. He bit half of the garlic bread and handed me the other half. I shook my head, and he pushed it closer to my mouth and raised his eyebrows, but I pulled back and laughed. He smirked and shrugged as he popped the other half in his mouth.

"Jayce! Did you hear a word I said?" Mr. G asked firmly, startling me and causing us to turn our attention to him immediately.

With his mouth still full, he groaned, "Yes, Dad, I heard you! I nodded when you said it the first time. I'll take care of it."

His dad turned back to Mom and muttered something before walking out the door with some bags in hand, leaving her to carry the extra blanket.

"I'll see you tomorrow, honey. You two have a great night, okay? Remember, visitation is almost over," Mom's tone was sympathetic and calm.

She left after hugging Jay and me. I looked over at Jay, who was swiftly texting on his phone.

"Are you and your dad okay?" I asked hesitantly.

"Yeah, why?" He said while distracted by his phone.

I fumbled with my fingers before I replied, "You two seem to be a bit more hostile than I remember."

He didn't answer and kept texting, causing me to clear my throat loudly. "Jay? Jay??"

His head shot up, and his expression was almost annoyed. "We're fine, Rae. It's nothing more than Dad being his usual, nit-picky self. Seriously, don't worry about it."

After a few more minutes of his distracted texting, a nurse came in to remind us that visitation was ending soon. He gently caressed my cheek with the back of his hand.

"Don't worry about the flowers, okay? They'll be delivered to you by midday tomorrow. I promise," he assured me.

I thought for a moment, then realized that he had the time a bit off. "Wait, but I have to be out of the room by-"

"Nine, yeah, I got that. Have a little faith in me, please. I won't let you down. I'll be back in the morning to help you get home," he interrupted before saying his goodbyes and leaving.

With all the drama and weird tension finally gone, I decided to sleep for a bit. I pulled the blanket up higher and tried to get comfortable, but it was still hard to rest. I couldn't help but think that I was somehow the cause of the problems that had been happening. Before I ended up in the hospital, things were fine, but now, Mr. Gonzales and Jayce can barely stand to breathe the same air. I needed to do something to help them get through this rough patch, especially Jay, who seemed more stressed than usual.
