"If I knew that you both were stopping by, I would have brought more food," he said innocently.
"Ramona and I ate before we came. What did you get for Rae?" his dad asked nonchalantly.
As the number-four-hero-turned-food-delivery-driver walked over to me, a smile spread across our faces. "Pasta a la vodka with chicken and shrimp with some garlic bread and a San Pelligrino to wash it all down."
Mom nodded quietly, but Mr. Gonzales scoffed. "You think she's going to finish all of that? Also, wouldn't all that oil mixing with the medicine she's on make her nauseous? What about a simple sandwich? This is what I'm talking about, Jayce; you're always trying to do too much."
I gestured sympathetically. "I told him to get me that. I was feeling very ambitious at the time. I'll just eat what I can and let him take the rest."
Mr. Gonzales sighed as he turned back to me. "I understand. I just don't want you to get sick or get a stomach ache."
While Jay set up the food on the tray, the smell of pasta and seafood filled the air.
"Mr. G, I promise I'll be okay. Besides, I got bread to soak it all up, and Jay is here in case of anything," I tried to comfort him again.
Jayce brought the tray around in front of me and pressed his soft lips on the top of my head for a few seconds before he pulled away. "Bon appetit."
My breathing slowed, and the warm feeling in my chest returned. I wonder if I should tell the nurses in case it was a side effect of the medication.
Almost suddenly, I wasn't even hungry for food anymore. I focused my gaze on the savory plate of pasta in front of me before glancing up quickly. I caught Mom smiling sweetly at us, but Mr. Gonzales rolled his eyes and frowned. He stood up abruptly and adjusted his shirt collar.
"I'm taking off for the night. Let me know if you need anything, okay?" He said to me curtly and began walking toward the door.
"Wait! What's wrong? Don't leave yet," I urged quickly, concerned at his sudden reaction.
Mom beckoned to Mr. G in a hushed voice, "Come on, Javier. Just stay for a little longer."
Just as he turned to Mom, a soft knock came on the door. We all looked up as Dr. Lockhart entered the room and surveyed the sea of flowers. He nodded pleasingly at Jay, then asked me how I was doing.
"Besides a little soreness, I feel almost 'normal' or whatever that means anymore," I admitted.
The doctor hummed and stared at the machines next to the bed. "You've been doing very well in every test we've given you the past week, and your reflexes are improving. Your back is a little sore, given that you're used to being active and have been in bed for a while. Still, I think I'm comfortable sending you home tomorrow morning."
Jay and I exchanged excited looks while Mom patted the bed, and Mr. Gonzales hummed approvingly.
Dr. Lockhart flipped through the chart until he reached a page and folded the paper. "Given that we're still trying to figure out how to address your secondary quirk, you'll stay on quirk suppressants indefinitely until we can resolve this. Besides that, you'll be discharged to the care of your mother. We recommend staying with her for at least a week or two until you can get your bearings and ensure you are not a danger to your safety."
"Why would I be a danger to myself? I'm doing a lot better, though," I asked, unsure.
"Because you could have another seizure or medical emergency that needs to be addressed immediately. Nothing out of that scope," Jay said quickly.
