Back to the Basics

My legs pushed her firmly enough that she sat up and laughed.

"I'm single and healing - both mentally and physically. Okay? Let my brain rest." I pulled at the blankets again.

Mia stood up and stretched, gathering her purse and cell phone. "Alright, Mrs. Weighted Justice, I'll text you later."

I picked up one of the pillows cushioning my sides and threw it at her. She turned around at the last minute and sidestepped my attempt, laughing at the pillow as it hit the floor. I motioned my finger toward the door, and she smirked.

"That's why you don't have an extra pillow now. Seriously though, everything is gonna come to light soon enough. You'll have to choose what you wanna do." Mia cautioned with her back turned to me.

"I'll be fine. I have no obligations to anyone or anything but the agency," I called out to her as she walked out while waving.

I sat back in my bed and thought about Mia's words. A lot happened so soon, but I deserve peace with everything I've been through. If that peace came in the form of Jayce spending extra time with me and helping out more with the agency, then so be it.

Now that the room was finally silent, I closed my eyes and rested.

A few hours later, I turned on my side and slowly opened my eyes to see Jay sitting on the chair next to me, typing away on his phone. The warm sun was still up, and the late afternoon rays shone aggressively into the room.

I reached my hand out and covered his phone screen.

He grinned sweetly and lowered his phone. "Hey, you. Did Mia tire you out? The nurses said you've been sleeping for a few hours now."

I chuckled. "She was fine; typical Mia being Mia."

In response, he pointed toward the window on the other side of my bed. "I brought you some sunflowers! I put them by the window so you could see them when you first woke up."

"Do you not remember that I agreed with your dad about waiting until some died before bringing new ones?" I pointed out to him jokingly.

Jay shrugged and leaned back in the chair. "Yeah, but then what's gonna make you smile throughout the day when I'm not here?"

My eyes almost rolled out of my head, making him laugh hard.

I crossed my arms as he leaned a little closer to me. "Don't you have a nurse to flirt with, Mr. Gonzales Diaz?"

He smirked and lowered his eyes, "And make you mad? Please, I'm smarter than that."

The muscles in my face stiffened as I glared at him. "Mad? Why would I get mad? Are you implying that I get jealous? Also, you're a single man."

"Single and ready to mingle," he affirmed with an amused expression.

"You've been mingling, so that's more than covered," I shot back while lightly squeezing the pillow behind my head.

After a few moments of silence, he cleared his throat. "Anyway, did they give you dinner yet? Do you need water or anything?"

"I'm fine. I swear I'm okay. I haven't eaten yet, but I'm not hungry," I protested.

Jay shook his head and sucked his teeth, obviously displeased by my lack of appetite. "Come on. You have to eat something. What are you craving? Something salty or sweet?"

"Neither," I mumbled.

He turned his head to the side and grinned, "Neither is not the correct answer. I'll get you anything you want, even if it's out of state."
