Back to the Basics

Jayce took her flowers and put them on the small table beside his daffodil arrangement while she hugged me tightly.

"Rae, I swear if you ever scare me like that again," Mia warned.

I held her tightly and sighed. "It was a simple health issue. No need for all the dramatics."

"A brain bleed is a simple health issue? Is almost breaking your body up a simple health issue? I-" she stopped abruptly when Jay cleared his throat and poured himself a cup of water.

We looked at him, and he glanced at Mia quickly before she turned back to me quietly. Although I was a bit puzzled by the exchange, I figured everyone was walking on eggshells since I woke up to keep me stress-free. Without my quirk, I couldn't take the time to consider the small details without noticeably zoning out.

She began again in a much calmer tone, "Well, I've been worried. You know how insane my boss is about that new overseas office. I told him I had a 'dire family emergency,' and he made me finish that report with the team before I could leave. I flew back the minute I could. I'm sorry I didn't come to see you sooner."

"Trust me, I get it. That tech job of yours is as demanding as ever, especially since you got promoted to lead manager over the security department last year," I reassured her excitedly.

Mia shifted over to give Jayce room as he leaned toward me and spoke in a low voice.

"I have to go pick up Lucian for patrol. Do you need anything? Snacks? Coffee? Another blanket?" He shifted the hair out of my face a bit.

I moved my head toward him when I felt his warm touch compared to the frigid hospital room. In return, he cupped my cheek and tilted my head until I stared into his eyes.

"No, nothing at all. I'll see you later." I shook my head.

Mia and he said their goodbyes as he walked out and shut the door behind him.

After looking at the door, she turned back to me, and smirked while putting her purse and cell phone on the chair beside my bed. "He's quite involved in your recovery, I see?"

"Check the cards on almost every arrangement in here, and that should answer your question," I giggled, pulling the blanket up to hide the warm sensation on my chest.

"All of this?! Girl, there has to be easily 12 or more vases in here, and all of them are so different!" Her mouth was slightly agape as she scanned the plethora of flowers.

My head pressed back against my pillow. "Yeah, he's been amazing. A couple of days ago, I had a craving for some chocolate croissants, and he brought me an entire dozen. Granted, he took about two or three of them, but still."

Mia laughed and rested her hand on her hip, "That man is such a foodie at heart but somehow stays fit as hell."

"I mean, it works out in his favor. If he adds fifty pounds to his fist or arms, he can get his reps in at his desk," I reminded her wittily, causing Mia to smirk.

"Yeah? I wonder what else he can add weight to," she suggested in a flirty tone as she lay on my legs.

I pushed my knees into her back, but she kept laughing.

"Damn, Mia. Why don't you ask him yourself?" I snorted.

She sighed exasperatedly. "I could, or I could just wait for you to tell me."

"What? How the hell would I know?" I turned my head towards the window.

I felt her flipping on her stomach while still lying on my legs. My gaze met hers a few seconds later.
