He leaned against the railing as a wave of intrigue washed over him. What were they discussing?
Even though he already made a theory on what they are discussing, he wished he could be part of a moment free from the worries of the day and the burden of his injury. It's also unusual for Ku to be feeling this lonely. It's very unusual.
They talked for a very long time, or Ku thought they did because he was getting pretty tired of standing and watching them. So when he was about to head back inside, he caught a glimpse of something that looked like a robot Scorpion, so he paused.
He’d been seeing that creature ever since yesterday – a bizarre, scorpion-crab-like creature near the bridge. What the hell was it? He lingered a moment longer before slipping an earpiece into his ear and contacting his team.
"Akabane Ku, here. I spotted something resembling a small scorpion or crab near the bridge. It looks like a Neighbor. What's the order?" Ku's voice was tight in his earpiece.
"Another one? Damn, Meeden really attracts them, doesn't it?" Shu's reply was followed by a series of distant explosions.
"Eh? Shu? What in the world are you doing?" Miku's voice was laced with worry.
"Oh – it's nothing—" A deafening BAAM cut him off. "I'm just… cooking."
Explosions? Cooking? It sounded like him, but even for Shu, that was a loud way to cook.
"As if we'd believe—" Miku's disbelief was interrupted by a screech of static. From the corner of his eye, Ku saw it – a black portal ripped open in the sky near the bridge. "It's here."
"EMERGENCY WARNING! EMERGENCY WARNING!"
"Aiyaya. How troublesome," Shu groaned, the warnings echoing in his ears.
"A GATE IS OPENING IN THIS AREA. ALL PEOPLE IN THE AREA, MUST TAKE SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. I REPEAT."
A colossal, floating monster erupted from the gate, its descent toward the city swift and terrifying.
"ALL PEOPLE IN THE AREA, MUST TAKE SHELTER IMMEDIATELY."
"Oh? An Ilgar?" Ku muttered, the words unintentionally broadcast to his team.
"An Ilgar? One of those decides to show up in Meeden? Oh my, the city's doomed," Miku gasped.
"How far is it from the base?" Mitsuki's voice, calm and measured, cut through the chaos.
"Not far. It's circling the bridge, bombing the houses below. We're close, but out of range," Ku explained, his eyes catching movement on the bridge. Was it Mikumo? Yuma? Kitora? Replica-?
"Understood. Don't take unnecessary risks. If intervention is necessary, do so discreetly, without revealing your identities. Protect the base at all costs. I'm out of the city; I'll be back tomorrow," Mitsuki commanded, his voice as steady as ever.
"Copy. Though, I don't think the Ilgar will attack much longer," Ku replied.
"You think?" Miku questioned.
"One of the Border agents is heading toward the Neighbor. She'll likely engage it," Ku explained, pointing out the approaching figure.
"Will she be able to handle it? Is she strong? I believe this is their first encounter with an Illgard," Shu asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
"She's A-rank," Ku stated, the information piquing their interest. "And Kuga Yuma, the Humanoid Neighbor I mentioned yesterday, is with her. I doubt he'll let that trion soldier destroy it. Likely, Mikumo-kun is assisting him."
"I don't know any of those three, but I'm trusting you on this one, Ku," Shu said, another explosion punctuating his words.
"All right. Miku, observe the fight between the A-rank and the Ilgar with Ku. Report your findings tomorrow," Mitsuki ordered.
"Copy," Ku and Miku responded simultaneously.
The bombing began.

"Hey, that girl’s not that bad," Miku praised as she stood on the rooftop of their base alongside Ku. Below them, the city was engulfed in chaos, the sounds of explosions and sirens echoing in the air, a cacophony caused by the Ilgar’s rampage. They both stared intently at the scene unfolding before them, watching as Mikumo scrambled to contain the destruction and help the civilians get to safety.
After her comment, Miku reached into a bucket of popcorn situated between them, grabbing a handful and munching thoughtfully. The salty crunch contrasted sharply with the tension of the moment, providing a brief distraction from the destruction below.
"Mhm. She’s a little arrogant, though," Ku replied, his voice steady as he continued to munch on his snack, his eyes never leaving the chaotic scene.
"Hm? Ish she thwat awrogant? How bwad?" Miku’s words were muffled by the popcorn filling her mouth, but her curiosity was clear as she glanced at Ku.
"Big. Really big. I don’t like her," Ku stated, taking a moment to sip the milk Miku had prepared for him earlier. The coolness of the drink was refreshing, but it did little to ease the weight of the situation they were witnessing.
Miku chewed thoughtfully, her expression shifting as she processed Ku's words. "But she’s trying to do her job, right? I mean, it’s not easy dealing with all this chaos." She gestured toward the scene, where the Kitora was desperately trying to fend off the destructive force of the Ilgar.
"Yeah, but that doesn’t give her the right to act superior. She could at least acknowledge the efforts of others," Ku replied, his brow furrowing as he watched a nearby building crumble under the assault. "The way she insulted Mikumo-kun earlier almost made me snap too."
"You have a point," Miku admitted, her voice softening as she turned her gaze back to the city. "But maybe she’s just really protecting the border. She's probably scared some C-rank would do what this Mikumo kid did." She popped another piece of popcorn into her mouth, her eyes reflecting the flickering lights of the chaos below.
"Maybe. But it doesn’t excuse her attitude," Ku said, shaking his head slightly.
As they continued to watch the unfolding chaos, the bond between them strengthened, even amid the turmoil surrounding their city.
Suddenly, Miku spat out the drink in her mouth. After a few hours of observing, the Ilgar seemed to be falling toward their position. I guess it’s going to explode, she thought, panic rising in her chest.
Ku stood up, alert but maintained a unbothered yet serious expression as he faced Miku. The shadow of the Ilgar loomed closer, darkening the rooftop where they stood.
"Miku, can I use it?" he asked casually, as though they were discussing something trivial rather than an imminent threat.
Miku met his gaze, her expression serious as she weighed the gravity of the situation. "That’s not up for me to decide," she replied, her voice steady despite the urgency in the air.
Without waiting for further confirmation, Ku shrugged off the tension and fixed his hat.
