"Madam Sir...." She whispered. "Is Babita Ji angry with me?"
Haseena smiled. "That is something you'll have to find out KS."
As Haseena finished her sentence, she heard the unmistakable footsteps of Babita Ji striding towards them, the sound of boots squelching amplifying in KS's and HM's ears. They both looked at each other, the fear apparent as they rolled their minds. "We are done for" the pair thought unanimously.
Babita Ji blew the whistle, the sound of it dragging painfully. Haseena and KS stopped their pushups, standing at attention.
"You need to be taught a lesson. This is for enhancing discipline." her voice echoed through the silence.
"Sorry madam" haseena muttered.
Before KS could muster up her courage to say sorry, Babita Ji yelled again. "Silence!"
They both stood straight, their eyes staring ahead, their legs buckling under the weight.
"One more hour!" she said.
Both Haseena and KS groaned inwardly yet knew better than to complain. They both chorused "Ji madam" and resumed their pushups as they started an internal conversation.
The two hours winded to a halt as Haseena and KS watched their team disperse with a deep longing in their heart. They waited, standing at attention, their minds crossing over the inevitable hour with their mentor as they recalled their days at the academy.
Babita Ji wasted no time. She blew the whistle. Her next words bombed Haseena and KS as she yelled "headstand."
They both blinked, apprehension dawning in their eyes. "But madam", KS stammered.
Babita Ji said nothing but pointed towards the back where a board was positioned on a stage a bit higher than the ground. Haseena and KS stared at it, their limbs frozen refusing to move as another whistle cap penetrated the air.
They sighed, resigning to their fate as they jogged towards the board and stood on their heads. Haseena's vision dimmed as she stood upside down, the strain of the drills pulsing through every muscle of her body. She willed herself to remain composed not willing to gather extra punishments.
As her head hit the ground, KS almost winced in pain, the aches in her muscles protesting vehemently. She closed her eyes and concentrated on her breathing, determined to complete the punishment.
With the blow of the whistle, they both heaved a sigh of relief and stood up, monetarily dizzy. Babita Ji stood unfazed at their discomfort barking yet another drill as their feet planted on the ground. After what seemed to be an eternity of relentless drills, Babita Ji blew the whistle one last time.
Haseena and KS dropped down to the ground, their backs hitting the grass hard. They winced in pain as every limb breathed fire. They stood up and chugged the juice bottle instantly. Babita Ji remained silent as the trio headed back into the station.
She stepped in to the gym room as Babita Ji stood and saluted her. KS looked at her again still unable to read her expressions.
"Madam..." she began. "Are you angry with me?"
She was silent.
"Madam...please tell me what I did?" she asked, her voice pleading.
"KS, your anger- you let it control yourself today." she said.
KS blinked her eyes momentarily dazzled by what she said. As the truth dawned on her, she stepped down and lowered her gaze.
"Madam I'm sorry..." she whispered.
"Karishma Singh you need to work on your anger. It will only result in breaking trust."
KS's heart sank as her mentor stood there ignoring her. She understood how angry Babita Ji must be feeling.
KS rushed near her, kneeling next to her. "Madam, punish me however you want...but please don't stay without talking."
KS voice pleaded with desperation yet Babita Ji stood unfazed her eyes scouring the documents.
KS got up, held her ears and started doing sit-ups, a desperate measure to gain her madam's attention. KS felt suffocated, the breath in her extinguished from exhaustion yet she kept going. A fire burned through her, her legs trembling as she struggled to complete.
As haseena prepared to leave, she peaked inside the gym room and saw KS engaged in sit-ups while Babita Ji fussed about her files. Haseena rushed inside seeing KS almost stumble, supporting her from behind.
Babita Ji stood up, her heart racing the anger in her eyes fading.
"KS are you okay?" Haseena asked still supporting her.
"Haan madam I just lost my step."
"Karishma madam sit down."
"No madam, please forgive me" she said as she pulled her ears down,
Babita Ji stepped forward and led KS to a chair. "Karishma, I always tell you that anger isn't a good thing. You have to learn to control it."
Haseena sat next to her lightly taping against her arm. "KS, you are a passionate officer but you need to learn how to drive your passion into delivering justice and not violence."
KS nodded understanding brewing deep inside her. "Madam, I promise to both of you that I'll control my anger." A resolute determination set over her eyes despite the exhaustion of the day.
Babita Ji ordered them both to sit silently and remove their shoes and socks as she went outside. She came back carrying a bottle whilst she sat down and started rubbing the ointment into their legs. A sense of relief flooded through their aching muscles yet they protested only to be silenced.
Haseena marveled at how her mentor balanced the firmness and love graciously. As she continued her massaging. Haseena knew that beneath the tough exterior, Babita Ji had deep love towards them.
Babita Ji continued massaging their legs as Haseena and KS could do nothing but watch. They embraced the familiar warmth of her that shone despite her toughness. As she finished, the trio sat around, relieving memories, the tensions slowly fading into the night.
Babita Ji looked at her two students, a smile forming on her lips. She was taken back to the days of her academy. Babita Ji was the toughest instructor but with Haseena and Karishma, her toughness faded. She laughed as she recalled how her guarded interior crumbled in the presence of Haseena and Karishma. She looked at them, her heart tingling with guilt as she noted their exhausted faces but Babita Ji knew that as her cadets they needed to be strong. Her motherly demeanor always shone through in their presence, she thought as she continued to relieve their tension.
Haseena looked around the room, the heaviness of her heart melting away with presence of her mentor and her best friend. She paused over the day, her mind churning over a quiet reflection. The physical training was supposed to be a punishment but Haseena felt herself elevating her stamina and her vigor with every grueling drill that was imposed on them. She looked at Babita Ji, an unwavering honor lighting her heart as she silently acknowledged her support and her guidance. Haseena knew that despite being a senior officer, Babita Ji's support always rallied around her, a constant familiarity propelling her forward.
KS was exhausted as she rested her head on the chair. She felt the tensions slowly boil away as the day ceased to an end where she was surrounded by love and companionship. Babita Ji's presence had awakened KS to acknowledge the liability of her anger. Her mind hovered over her actions when her anger had brought her and the MPT inevitable consequences. The words of Haseena and Babita Ji replayed in her heart with every beat. She solemnly vowed to herself to control her anger stepping into the role that Babita Ji and Haseena madam has envisioned for her.
Haseena and KS briefly nodded at each other, a subtle gleam of acknowledgement passing. They both knew that Babita Ji's addition to the team would enforce strict protocols but they rested easy knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead they had the complete support of their mentor.
