The cool morning air was waking me up as I leaned against the cold stone of the castle with a cigarette between my fingers. The quiet was welcome, a reprieve from the noise of the night before. I'm not so eager about the early hours, but sleep after what happened last night... whatever that was with Agnes. She had a way of getting under my skin, and it annoyed the hell out of me.
The castle doors groaned open, pulling my attention. Then I saw a short girl walking in the corridors lead by a black dog. I didn't expect to see her this early. I know she walkes Milo but not at this time.
"Agnes," I said, smirking as her eyes landed on me.
Her reaction wasn't unexpected. I don't think she wanted to be seen like this.
"Morning," she muttered, tugging her dog's leash as if it could pull her away faster.
I took a drag from my cigarette, letting the smoke curl lazily from my lips. "Out early, huh? After last night I didn't expect to see you at all"
Her cheeks turned pink, and she refused to meet my eyes. "What do you want, Mattheo?"
"Nothing," I said, shrugging. "Just saw you and thought I'd say hi."
"Hi," she snapped, already walking away.
"Mind if I join you?"
She stopped but didn't turn around. "Yes, actually, I do. I'm not really in the mood for company."
Ouch. Not that I took it personally. Agnes wasn't the type to let anyone in easily, and that was part of what made her interesting. Still, the way her shoulders tensed told me more than she probably wanted me to know.
"Come on, Darling. I don't bite."
Her face became more annoyed then before as she herd me call her darling. Her grip tightened on the lease. "Last night was... I just, let's not make it a thing, okay?"
I raised an eyebrow, watching her. So, she was thinking about it too.
"It doesn't have to be a thing," I said lightly, pushing off the wall. "I just don't have anything better to do. And you look like you could use someone to talk to."
Her frown deepened, and for a moment, I thought she'd tell me to get lost. But instead, she exhaled sharply, her resolve cracking just slightly.
"I'm fine"
"Sure you are," I said, smirking again. "But you're still letting me come along."
Her glare made my skin shiver, but she didn't stop me as I stubbed out my cigarette and fell into step beside her. I kept my distance, hands in my pockets, letting Milo lead the way across the grounds. Agnes didn't say a word, and I didn't push her. Not yet, anyway. I'd give her time. One thing I'd learned about her was that patience always paid off.
