Some people would call your sister a kind soul, and others, a naive fool who took everything at face value.

To you she is both. Depending on what stage of grief you are oscillating through. Several years have gone by, and yet the wound is still fresh, and the pain raw.

“You should have listened Nisa.” You whisper.

“What?” Your lab partner, Rynn, turns and asks. You curse inwardly and turn from the object of your grief. A royal purple hooded cloak gliding down the rose lined walkway below your window. The last time it was in fashion was several years back, and the last time you had seen one of that colour was on that fateful day.

Stop it, that's not her. It's not Nisa’s. You close your eyes to let the thought soak your brain.

You finally meet Rynn’s concerned gaze. “I said let's boil the solution.”

His eyes narrow. “We already did that.”

“Um, how about we centrifuge it?”

He takes a step back and sputters with incredulity. “This solution contains Xantrium-213. That the last thing you want to do with it.” He gently touches your arm. “Y/n, are you okay? You seem to be distracted.”

“I'm fine.”

Right on cue, the large, double doors to the lab opens. And in struts the dean, stopping Rynn and saving you from anymore prodding.

“Sir,” You give a low bow. You straighten and notice Rynn is still look at you with worry.

“I'm serious, I'm fine.” You hastily whisper. Sighing, he turns from you to give his greetings.

“Sir.” He does a similar bow.

“Ah, Rynn and y/n! How are you?” Professor Raul booms.

“Fine sir.” Rynn chuckles nervously.

“I see you've been busy. Working overtime.” He says pointedly, looking towards your apparatus set-up.

“What can we do? A scientist’s life is one of constant work and servitude.” You say.

Raul beams. “And that chipper attitude is why I am here Y/n. Rynn, would you please give us a moment?”

He nods. “Of course sir. I'll see you tomorrow y/n. I have some errands to run.”

He waits for the doors to close before beginning. Clasping his hands behind his back, he begins to circle you. “Now, back to you y/n.”

“You said it yourself ealier. Your work ethic and excellent work has made you a name, and albeit it's a small one, it's still noticable. Noticable enough for the Chancellor to be interested.”

You gasp and cover your mouth with your hand. The Chancellor.

“I know you wish to remain here after graduation for research, so we discussed. The Faculty is offering you a position within Piltover Academy working with Hextech and it's inventors, since you're so good with theoretics. You will be working with them and assisting with whatever they need. As you know, they are a leaders in their field, and the inventors of Hextech. I'm expecting a lot out of you y/n. If the quality of your work is sufficient then you'll get tenure after graduation. Which is two years from now, right? This is a once in ten lifetimes opportunity.” He stops beside the window to laugh at his own joke.

“One. Professor Raul I don't know what to say.” Gratitude bubbles in your chest. You feel the hot prick of tears.

“A thank you, will be sufficient.” He hums as he looks through the window. “I don't understand fashion nowadays. Who in their right mind would wear such tedious clothing? It's a bother in the the heat with all that dark material, and it has to be a pain to drag through muddy streets too. Women.” He sniffs and turns his attention towards your work station.

“Thank you sir, I'll never forget this act of kindness.” You say, dazed.

“You're welcome, and thank yourself also. If your work was subpar then they wouldn't be anything that I could say to convince the faculty board. Keep up the good work.”

“Yes sir.”

Mr Raul pulls out a gold pocket watch. “I'm short on time. See you later. And by the way, add some water.”

“What?”

“To the solution, that's what it needs. Good day.”

You try to shake yourself out of a daze, as you watching the retreating figure of the dean.

“And by the way y/n?”

“Yes?”

"You begin work with Viktor and Jayce next Thursday.”
