Sniper's camper followed steadily along the unmarked forest pathway on the frostbitten ground, trailing behind the rest of the team in the van. Though he would have preffered to travel by himself, forcing 8 other mercs to cram into what was supposed to be a bread delivery truck seemed cruel and unusual. As a result, he allowed Spy to ride shotgun and put Pyro in his living quarters. Though he wasn't fond of either, they both were quiet enough to make this trek much less agonizing.
On the other hand...
"Demo! Quit hogging the leg room!" Scout shoved Demo to the side, pushing him up against the wall.
"Aye lad if ye lay yer' wee hands on me again you'll be diggen' em' outta yer' own arse'!" He shouted.
"Engineer! We are down 3 men!" Soldier poked his head between Heavy, the driver and Engineer, the navigator. "For the last time, son, they're behind us!"
"Aw man I was hoping they'd made a wrong turn at that last cliff." Scout said, also poking his head up at the window as the vehicle slowed to a stop.
"This is place?" Heavy looked at the large abandoned mansion in the middle of the woods. Old boards held on by rusty nails covered the windows, and faded police tape blocked the doors.
"I don't think i've seen a place more haunted than this one. Are you sure this job ain't a setup?" Scout turned to Engi
"No, no. This is the place. Exactly as Miss Pauling wrote down. Either that or my finder's broken."
"Aye this looks a bit like the old house i'd been to as a kiddie. ''Twas where i lost me eye." Demo said, slowly getting out of the van with the rest of the mercs.
Soldier chuckled
"Merasmus...You sneaky devil. He must be behind this mission!" Soldier exclaimed.
"Vell, whoever it vas must not have thought much on our safety! Look at zis!" Medic pushed his boot down on the first step leading up to the porch, and the rotten wood caved in.
"Good god. What a mess." Sniper said as he exited his vehicle "We're meant to stay here? Things' beggin for a bloody tetanus shot at the door."
"Perhaps living in a camper is not as horrible as it can be after all, Bushman." Spy said.
"I bet there are raccoons around here! Scout, we must capture a raccoon to assert our dominance over their domain!" Soldier said.
"Oh man, maybe this place ain't so bad after all!" Scout ran off with Soldier into the building.
"Mein Gott! Ze are trying to get zemselves rabies!" Medic said as he tested out the rest of the steps.
The others all gathered their surroundings while Pyro exited the camper. He looked around and, amidst the commotion, noticed a slight ringing coming from the van. He grabbed engi's laptop and opened up the call.
Pyro waved at Pauling's face as she appeared on the screen.
"Mrrph mrrmph. Mrrphh."
"Oh-Hi Pyro! Is everything ok there? Where is Engi? Can you put him on the phone?"
Pyro wandered over to Engi and tapped him on the shoulder.
"What's the matter, sugarcube?" He turned around to see Pauling staring at the house.
"Wow! No wonder their instructions said 'Make house livable within the next 48 hours! This place is a wreck! Also, hi, Engi. Glad to see you made it ok."
"Hey there now miss Pauling. We're doing all right. Legs like jelly but that's how sitting will getcha'. What was it you said now about this place?"
"Well your employer said this is where you'll be protecting the intelligence for the foreseeable future, so try and get comfortable. They want the whole placed clean, water, heating, electricity. The works."
"Aw shucks now. I didn't know we'd been boiled down to housekeepers."
"I will have to agree with our resident Texan, here. They expect us to do busywork? Surely a maid is cheaper." Spy said, irritated.
"Yes, Spy, and for the record, this job is a miracle for you mercenaries. This employer said they can help get your names scrubbed off of America's most wanted; permanently scrubbed off."
"Oh! Well why did you not just say so? Only problem is that I forgot my housemaid dress back in Tuefort!"
"Spy, whether you like it or not this is your home for a while. They said they've provided all sorts of sheets, clothing, toiletries, smokes and booze: Just lay low for a while, ok?! When the intelligence arrives, just protect it until your employer comes to pick it up again. Think of it as a vacation! And that goes for ALL of you. So you better get along! I gotta go. Call me if you need me, ok? Pauling out."
"Whelp." Engi said, closing his laptop "I 'spose we better get to it, then."
