"You all can thank Miss Avery for my tardiness," Snape announced as he entered the room.
The second his voice was heard the room got silent instantaneously as a few people turned to look at Seraphina who was doing her best to ignore them as she got her book out. She looked over at her partner and realized it was Mattheo.
He stared back at her with an undeniable knowingness written all over his face. She just sighed shaking her head a little as it hit her that it was Mattheo who told Snape. She should have realized immediately it was him who had something to do with it. She couldn't physically prove it, but she had a gut feeling it was Mattheo. He had been watching her nonstop and probably wanted her to know it was him.
She rolled her eyes and opened her textbook, focusing on Snape as he began to lecture about the importance of Chinese Chomping Cabbage and its importance in Skele-gro. Seraphina reached into her bag to take out her quill and ink. The whole time she could still feel Mattheo's eyes fixed on her from the left of her. She kicked him under the table to get him to stop, but he reached over grabbing her wrist to keep her hand still. She only then, realized that he was looking at the writing on her hand.
Mattheo had a hunch that there was something under her bandage from her detention with Umbridge but wasn't expecting to see a bright red inscription. He stared at her hand, trying to make sense of how Umbridge would have done that and why Seraphina didn't immediately say something to them when she got back last night. She was so nonchalant about it, she probably wouldn't have said anything if he hadn't noticed the bandages on her and Potter's hands. He could feel his frustration quickly turn into anger the more he looked at it.
She had that happen because of him. Because she had to be stupid and interject herself into conversations that had nothing to do with her. Now it was his fault that she was hurt, and he could barely stand it. She didn't understand how she could be so stupid and careless. Like he needed her to come to his rescue. He could have handled Umbridge himself, he didn't need Seraphina of all people fighting his battles for him. This was beyond helping her with her charms essay to make up for it.
Seraphina pulled her hand from his iron-clad grasp rather forcefully. Causing Mattheo to snap out of his thoughts. He glared back at her, with a cold unreadable expression that Seraphina wasn't a stranger too. She couldn't tell what he was thinking and didn't know if she wanted to know. She put her left hand under the desk and out of view, she was too embarrassed that he had seen it and worried that someone else would.
Both of them rolled their eyes at one another and quickly went to immerse themselves in their lesson. Occasionally they would look over at the other as they worked, much like last night but now there was a clear icy tension between the both of them. Whatever lightheartedness from the night before was now long gone.
When the class was over, the two of them packed up their things in silence. They were both angry at one another and wanted to get as far away from the other as they could. Pansy walked up beside Seraphina with her bag as Theo and Enzo waited for Mattheo.
"You alright?" Pansy asked looking at Seraphina who just nodded.
"Yeah. I'm fine." She said bitterly as Mattheo moved past her. She and Pansy followed Mattheo, Theo, and Enzo out of the classroom and out of the dungeons. Grateful for their short break between lessons because that meant that Seraphina and Mattheo could cool off before they were shoved together in a room for the remainder of the afternoon.
The two groups walked wordlessly through an empty corridor, Seraphina moved to go around Theo, Enzo, and Mattheo. She wanted to put as much distance as she could between her and Mattheo. She knew that he was the one who told Snape. He didn't even have to admit it. The worst part of it was she couldn't figure out why he did that in the first place. Was he trying to hold something over her head? Punish her for doing him a favor?
