Author's POV: ☆
Baekhyun's eyes tracked you as Jeonghan quickly led you away, his sharp mind piecing together fragments of a puzzle he hadn't realized was sitting right in front of him. He clicked his tongue in frustration, brow furrowed as he racked his brain for where he had seen Jeonghan’s face and heard your name before. It hit him like a bolt of lightning—Jeonghan from Seventeen. The name carried weight in the underworld, the name of their biggest rival. How could he have missed it?
And you...
You weren’t just any random woman here as Jeonghan’s partner. No, there was something else. Something dangerous. Baekhyun’s lips curled into a slow, menacing smile as it dawned on him—you were the one Heeseung had been hunting for. The target of their manhunt for weeks now.
Without hesitation, Baekhyun clenched his fists, his expression darkening, and he began weaving through the crowd in pursuit. His pace quickened as he saw Jeonghan glance over his shoulder, eyes narrowing in recognition. Jeonghan immediately picked up on Baekhyun’s intentions and quickened his own pace, nudging you subtly.
"Walk faster," Jeonghan muttered under his breath, his hand lightly on the small of your back as he steered you through the crowd.
You caught on instantly, your nerves buzzing with sudden alertness. "Is he following us?" you asked, heart hammering in your chest.
Jeonghan’s jaw tightened, his eyes flicking briefly toward Baekhyun before returning forward. "Yes. Stay close. We need to lose him."
As you both moved swiftly through the sea of well-dressed guests, Jeonghan’s sharp eyes scanned the room for an escape route. He led you through different directions, cutting through groups of people and ducking into crowded areas, hoping to shake Baekhyun off. But Baekhyun was no amateur. He moved with precision, his gaze never leaving you for a second. And worse still, he wasn’t alone—other men in black suits, likely security or his backup, began closing in from different angles.
Jeonghan's pulse quickened as the situation grew more dangerous. Without a word, he grabbed your wrist tightly and broke into a run, pulling you along as the pursuit intensified. You glanced behind you, eyes widening when you saw not just Baekhyun but several other men following at an alarming pace.
"Jeonghan—" you started, your voice breathless, but your heels were slowing you down. The elegant shoes you had worn to fit into the high-class event now felt like a trap. You tried your best to keep up, but it became clear that you were a liability at this speed.
Then, without warning, you lifted your skirt just enough to free your legs and managed to kick off the heels. The change was immediate—you suddenly felt lighter, faster. To Jeonghan's surprise, you were now sprinting ahead of him, matching his speed with impressive agility.
Jeonghan shot you an approving glance but didn’t have time to comment as you both dashed toward an open balcony. You stumbled to a stop at the edge, your breath coming in ragged gasps as you looked down at the dizzying height. The distance from the balcony to the ground below was terrifying—too far to jump without serious risk.
But there wasn’t time to hesitate.
Your gaze flicked to the bracelet on your wrist, your heart dropping as you saw the flashing indicator—time was running out. You remembered Hoshi and Woozi’s words vividly. The microchip implanted in your wrist had a time limit, and you were fast approaching it. The device had been a last resort to ensure you wouldn’t try to run from the mission. Now it was counting down to your potential doom.
"Jeonghan, we don’t have time!" you gasped, panic seeping into your voice. "We either jump or—"
Before you could finish, Jeonghan grabbed your hand firmly. "Trust me."
Without another second of hesitation, he leaped off the balcony, pulling you along with him. Your stomach lurched, and for a brief, horrifying moment, you thought this was it—this was the end. The wind whipped past your face, and the ground rushed up to meet you far too quickly.
But then, Jeonghan landed with precision and grace, his body absorbing the impact in a way that left you both surprisingly unscathed. You hit the ground softly beside him, barely registering what had just happened.
"How...?" you breathed, eyes wide with shock.
Jeonghan didn’t answer. He simply pulled you up onto your feet in one swift motion. "Move!" he ordered, his voice urgent. There was no time to dwell on the near-death experience; Baekhyun and his men were still in pursuit, and you had to keep running.
Your legs felt wobbly from the landing, but adrenaline pushed you forward. The timer on your bracelet was still ticking down, and the weight of that knowledge spurred you on. You ran as fast as you could, your lungs burning as you tried to keep pace with Jeonghan. But suddenly, you felt his grip slip from your hand.
You were yanked backward by one of Baekhyun’s security guards, his rough grip nearly knocking the wind out of you. Jeonghan turned sharply, his eyes blazing with frustration. But before he could react, you took matters into your own hands.
With a sharp twist of your body, you delivered a well-aimed kick to the guard’s knee, causing him to grunt in pain. You followed it up with a swift punch to his jaw, and before he could recover, you swept his legs out from under him. He crumpled to the ground, and you stood over him, breathing hard but victorious.
Jeonghan stared at you, momentarily stunned by how effortlessly you took the guard down. It wasn’t just the clean moves—it was the precision, the strength. You fought with a skill he hadn’t expected.
"Nice moves," he muttered, a flicker of admiration in his voice. But there was no time for compliments.
You grabbed his wrist this time, yanking him back into a sprint. "We need to go! Now!" you urged, your eyes wide with panic as the seconds on your bracelet ticked dangerously close to zero.
You both sprinted toward the car waiting for you at the exit. The door swung open, and you threw yourselves inside just as the car peeled away at high speed. Hoshi and Woozi were already working frantically at their computer systems in the front seat.
"Quick! The timer—take it out!" you shouted, panic rising in your voice as you watched the timer drop to a mere 53 seconds. "Deactivate it!"
Hoshi’s fingers flew across the keyboard, and Woozi muttered something under his breath as they both worked in a synchronized frenzy. The tension in the car was thick, the sound of your heavy breathing filling the space.
"Got it!" Hoshi finally exclaimed, hitting a final key with a flourish.
You glanced at your wrist, watching in relief as the timer stopped with just 12 seconds remaining. You let out a shaky breath, slumping against the seat in exhaustion.
Jeonghan exhaled beside you, his own chest heaving from the adrenaline rush. "That was too close."
The car sped off into the night, leaving the chaos of the mansion far behind. As the tension slowly faded, a strange feeling settled over you. Despite the danger, the near-death experience, and the breathless escape, you couldn’t deny it... There was something thrilling about it all.
"That was... insane," you murmured, half to yourself.
Jeonghan glanced over at you, a tired smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah. But admit it—you had fun."
You didn’t reply. But the small, amused smile on your face said enough.
