If you asked Marlene what her relationship with Liam was like, she'd say it was okay. The two hadn't really hung out alone together and seemed to only really hang out when Frank was around.
But when Liam comes back from yet another foster home and...
"Right, are you sure you want to do this?" Sapphire asked. She was hesitant, she didn't want to make the situation any worse.
"I need to know what's going to happen in the future with these people." Toby explained. He was talking about his potential foster family.
Sapphire sighed, looking at the boy sympathetically. "Just because some people believe these tell the future, doesn't mean it's true." She explained.
Toby, still looking extremely upset shrugged. "But it might be."
Sapphire sighed, shaken her head before starting the reading. "Cut the cards." Toby halved the cards. "Pick one." She told him.
Toby slid his hand along the line of cards sapphire had made before slowly picking one up. "Let's see it then." Sapphire grinned.
Toby shook his hand, throwing the card down with the rest. "Death." Sapphire looked at him with wide eyes.
"Toby..." Marlene began, but Toby shook his head and began running out the room.
"Toby, wait!" Sapphire called as the two ran after him.
Running into his room, Toby slammed the door in the two girls face, ignoring their calls for him.
"No, no, Toby listen to me. That card doesn't mean what you think." Sapphire called, knocking on his door.
"What have you done now?" Tracy asked, coming up behind the two.
Marlene glared. "Her? It's you who started this mess in the first place."
The three eventually got into Toby's room. It wasn't hard to spot him from where he layed underneath his bed.
The three sat down on his bed, leaning their heads over so they could see him.
"Toby, you've got it all wrong." Marlene began, looking at the boy sadly.
Tracy nodded her head. "Let sapphire explain about the death card."
"No one dies or anything." Sapphire explained. "It's all about turning over a new leaf."
"Leaving the old you behind." Tracy continued.
Marlene hummed. "Having a fresh start."
Toby looked at the three sadly. "What's wrong with the old me?" He asked, sounding heartbroken.
"Absolutely nothing is wrong with the old you, Toby."
"What's going on?" Gina asked, entering the room as well.
The three looked up to her. Tracy smiled. "Just a minute, Gina." She told her before looking back down at Toby. "If your mum and dad could talk to you now, what would they say?" She asked.
Toby stayed silent.
"They'd tell you not to stop living your life. To continue it, even if it's without them." Marlene told him. "They'd tell you to do what you want to do."
Later that day, Marlene was out in the garden, kicking a ball around with Frank and Liam. Mike and Toby came out joining them.
Toby had made the decision that he wanted to stay at the dumping ground indefinitely. He wasn't ready to get fostered, and that was okay.
"Oi, oi, oi, oi!" Mike yelled for Liam to past the ball. "How tall do you think I am?" He asked when the ball went over him.
"Can I join in?" Toby asked, finally looking happy again.
It wasn't long until the rest of the house joined in as well. The garden filled with happy yells, laugher, and smiles. Toby might not of had a foster family, or his parents, but he had a family within elmtree house. They all did, regardless of how dysfunctional it may of been.
