Mingyu's eyes widened slightly, though he quickly tried to hide his surprise. You caught the brief flicker of impressed disbelief on his face before he masked it with a forced smirk. Clearly, he hadn't expected you to be so capable, given your seemingly fragile appearance.
After setting the barbell down, you turned to him with an innocent smile, basking in the small victory. Mingyu narrowed his eyes, now seeing you in a new light. You weren't just their errand girl. There was potential there—potential they could exploit.
"Not bad," he muttered, before turning his attention to the door. "Let's see how you handle something else."
Moments later, the door opened, and a girl your age walked in. She was striking, with an air of confidence that demanded attention. Her appearance was flawless, from head to toe, but the way she glanced at you-eyes sweeping over you with disdain-made your stomach churn.
"This is Eunhee," Mingyu said, his voice almost too casual. "And you, Y/N, will be sparring with her."
Eunhee raised an eyebrow, a mocking smirk playing on her lips as she eyed you up and down. "Seriously? This girl looks like she'd break if I pushed her too hard."
You didn't flinch at her comment. Instead, a sly smile spread across your face. You'd dealt with worse, and the fact that she was already underestimating you was more of an advantage than anything else. If she thought you were weak, she'd never see what was coming.
Mingyu chuckled lightly, stepping between the two of you. "Go easy on her for the first few rounds, Eunhee. We don't want to break our new toy-"
Before he could finish, you cut him off, your eyes never leaving Eunhee's. "There's no need for that. I can handle myself." Your voice was steady, unwavering, and it only seemed to rile Eunhee up even more.
Eunhee's smirk mirrored your own. "Alright then," she said, her voice dripping with condescension. "Let's see if you can back up that confidence."
---
You stood in the locker room, wrapping your hands in preparation for the sparring match with Eunhee. Her endless taunting echoed around the room, but you remained unfazed. She didn't deserve your attention.
"Just call it quits already, you're wasting my time," she sneered, arms crossed as she leaned against the wall.
You glanced at her briefly before shrugging, your voice casual. "I'd love to, but I'm being forced to." You paused for a moment before adding, "And honestly, I don't know why you even agreed to this."
Her smirk faltered, the silence stretching for a beat longer than it should have. You could see the wheels turning in her mind-why had she agreed? Your words seemed to strike something in her, but the arrogance on her face never fully disappeared.
"Oh, shut up. I'm only here because I'm expected to beat your ass," she spat, her tone dripping with overconfidence.
You shook your head with a slight smirk, keeping your tone even. "Really? Then maybe stop whining and just get on with it. You agreed, didn't you?"
Her fists clenched, hands trembling ever so slightly with barely-contained frustration. She was itching to hurt you-you could see it in the tension in her muscles, in the way she glared at you as if you were her personal enemy. Fine by you. Let her get mad.
---
Once inside the sparring ring, Eunhee stood across from you with a smug grin plastered on her face. Her confidence oozed out of her stance, as if she thought she had already won.
The bell sounded, signaling the start of the match. Eunhee wasted no time, lunging forward with a punch aimed straight for your face. But you had been watching her closely, predicting her moves. With a swift motion, you dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding her fist.
Before she could recover, you delivered a solid punch to her abdomen, knocking the wind out of her. Eunhee doubled over, gasping for air, and staggered backward, clearly stunned by the force of your blow. The spectators exchanged glances-Wonwoo's lips twitched in amusement as he struggled to contain a laugh, while Mingyu's eyes widened in shock. Jun stood in the corner, clapping quietly, clearly impressed.
Eunhee fell to the ground, her face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and anger. As she tried to gather herself, you crouched down next to her, leaning in close to whisper in her ear. "Let's work on being humble, hon."
Her face contorted in rage as she slapped you hard across the cheek, the sound echoing in the room. Before you could react, she shoved you backward with all her might, knocking you to the ground. Without another word, she stormed out of the ring, clearly unable to handle the humiliation.
You scoffed, shaking your head at her childish behavior. For someone who was supposed to be so tough, she sure couldn't handle losing gracefully.
Jun was quick to rush over and help you up, gently pressing an ice pack to your reddened cheek. "That girl... yeah, that's Eunhee. She's arrogant, but she's also one of our best. Loyal for years, and I guess working under us has made her grow some horns."
"You alright?" Wonwoo asked, his usual nonchalance giving way to a hint of concern.
You nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine." Then, with a smirk, you added, "She slaps like a woman alright."
Jun chuckled, and even Wonwoo cracked a smile. The tension in the room lightened, though the sting on your cheek remained as a reminder of Eunhee's tantrum.
"Why did you make her spar with me again?" you asked, your tone curious.
Wonwoo and Jun exchanged glances before Wonwoo answered, "Like Mingyu said, we're testing what you're capable of. Figuring out how we can... use you."
Jun nodded in agreement, adding, "You're stronger than we thought. We'll definitely be taking advantage of that."
You didn't respond immediately, thinking back to what you had observed about Eunhee. She was more than just arrogant. Beneath the bravado was a girl desperate for validation, for recognition. As Jun had said, she was a hard worker, loyal for years. But that didn't excuse her attitude—or, whatever that was.
"She's insecure," you muttered under your breath. Jun tilted his head, intrigued. "Behind all that arrogance, she's just a scared little girl trying to prove something."
Jun stared at you for a moment, considering your words. "You're more insightful than I expected."
You shrugged, keeping your thoughts to yourself as the ice on your cheek dulled the sting. Whatever the reason behind Eunhee's behavior, you'd deal with her if you had to. After all, you'd already knocked her down once, and you wouldn't hesitate to do it again if she crossed you.
