September 23

Morning crept through the dark curtains, painting streaks of pale gold across the room. Renata stirred in her sleep, her eyelashes fluttering softly. A strange heaviness tugged at her chest - the same sort of unease she felt whenever her instincts whispered that something was wrong.

Her eyes opened.

The stillness around her was too calm, too quiet. She sat up, her expression serene yet sharp, and murmured under her breath, "It feels... off."

Without hesitation, she rose from the bed and slipped out of her sleepwear, dressing swiftly into her adventurer's outfit - a practical ensemble made for mobility and battle. Her movements were fluid and elegant, the quiet rustle of fabric filling the air.

Deep beneath her shadow, a faint commotion erupted.

"D-Don't look, you fools!" Cassis barked, his voice echoing sharply through the shadow realm. He threw a hand over his face, glaring at the other soldiers who immediately turned away in alarm. "Eyes down! Show some respect to our Empress!"

The shadow soldiers scrambled to obey, some mumbling apologies as they stared into the ground. Despite his own discipline, Cassis's ears burned red under his helm. The air in the shadow realm shimmered awkwardly for several seconds before calm returned.

Once fully dressed, Renata fastened her gloves and tied her hair with precise care. Her gaze was unreadable as always - calm, beautiful, and detached - yet a faint smirk played on her lips, as if she sensed the chaos below her feet.

"Let's see what's happening today," she said softly, leaving her room.

At the Adventurer's Guild, the atmosphere buzzed with morning activity. Warriors, mages, and hunters crowded around the towering bulletin board, their chatter filling the grand hall. Renata walked through the crowd, her mere presence parting them unconsciously. The receptionist, a woman with curled auburn hair and wide, nervous eyes, noticed her approach and immediately straightened.

"L-Lady Renata! Perfect timing. There's... a troubling request that requires immediate handling."

Renata glanced at her, then at the parchment being nervously offered to her. "Troubling?"

"Yes, ma'am. It's an establishment at the edge of town - looks like a children's daycare. But our informants say it's a front for something vile."

The receptionist swallowed. "A ring of adults pretending to care for children... only to lure them in. They haven't harmed anyone yet - the business just opened today. But it's only a matter of time before-"

Renata's gaze hardened. She didn't let the woman finish. With a faint nod, she took the parchment, folded it neatly, and turned toward the exit. "Understood."

The guild members watched in silence as she left - some in awe, others in relief.

Outside, the morning wind brushed against her face, carrying the faint scent of pine from the forest beyond the city walls. She walked with purpose, her boots crunching over fallen leaves.
