Ellie was walking with Inha in the cemetery, both enveloped in a heavy silence. Suddenly, Inha received a text message. "I know where Jae-i is," he said, glancing at Ellie, who simply nodded in acknowledgment.
They followed the directions to a secluded vacation house. As they approached, they saw Jae-i, who looked visibly ill. Ellie averted her gaze, discomfort evident on her face.
"Jae-i," Inha called out, making Jae-i stop in her tracks. "How dare you come here," she retorted, her eyes locking onto Ellie, who stood silently beside Inha.
Jae-i quietly invited them inside. Inha began to talk to her, leaving Ellie to look around the dimly lit, cluttered room. "I was worried. No one could reach you, and you haven't come to school," he said, his concern evident. Ellie joined them, feeling the tension thickening.
"Tell me, Jae-i, what's going on? Let me help you," Inha pleaded. Jae-i turned away, her shoulders slumped in defeat. "Go away. You can't help me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Inha took a deep breath, trying to keep his frustration in check.
"You're wrong. I can help," he insisted, his voice firm. Ellie stepped forward, her tone gentle but resolute. "Don't be hard-headed, Jae-i. If something is bothering you, tell us," she urged. Jae-i looked at Ellie, then sighed and averted her eyes. Inha's patience snapped.
"Why are you pushing me away? You look like you could faint any moment. You look miserable, like you could die. Why are you being so stubborn?" he demanded, grabbing her wrist. Tears began to well up in Jae-i's eyes.
"What can you do for me?" she burst out, her voice trembling. "I'm being threatened, and I don't know who's behind it," she admitted, causing Ellie to look away, her heart sinking.
"Tell me, what can you do to help me?" Jae-i challenged, making Inha fall silent. "Threatened?" he asked, his voice filled with disbelief. Ellie looked confused, her mind racing.
"By whom?" she asked, trying to understand the gravity of the situation. Jae-i looked at her, tears streaming down her face. "Why would someone threaten you?" Ellie pressed gently.
"Because I killed someone," Jae-i confessed, her voice cracking.
"What?" Ellie exclaimed, shock etched on her face. Jae-i began to sob uncontrollably.
"I said I killed someone," she repeated, her voice breaking. Inha's eyes widened in disbelief. "Who?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Ellie fell silent, the weight of the revelation hanging in the air.
"The scholarship kid," Jae-i whispered, her voice filled with anguish. Silence enveloped the room as the gravity of her confession sank in. The three of them stood there, the enormity of the situation pressing down on them.
