What if they were wrong about the Pandora Gem? What if it never granted the power of internal life, but instead granted something so much worse?

The Pandora.
It is said that upon bringing the gem underneath the moon where the light shines on the gem, tears will begin to fall. Those who drink such sacred tears will be granted eternal life.
But that is just a myth. A myth that most thieves don't believe. However, if such a jewel does exist, it wouldn't be a surprise that a thief dressed in black head-to-toe would want to steal it.
There they were, walking past the knocked-out security guards tied to a pole of the museum. The alarms were turned off so they could easily get away with stealing anything in the museum without worrying about the loud sirens blaring in their ears.
But they had their eyes on the prize already. At the end of the fifth floor, there lay a blue, crystal jewel on top of a red squared cushion. A clear glass box was protecting it from being stolen, but a glass box alone wasn't enough.
On the wooden stand, it read, "Kali's Tears". But the thief smirked knowing exactly what the gem was.
They pulled away the clear box, and with both hands they carefully picked up the blue stone. At first glance, it looked to be like a normal sapphire stone. But as the thief walked over to the giant glass window, they could see this red light in the center of the gemstone.
"Finally..."
The thief smirked as they brought the gemstone up toward the sky where the moon shined down only to smile widely at being correct. There, in the center of the gemstone was a much smaller stone that shined brightly red.
Expecting for the blue jewel to cry the tears of Pandora, they waited patiently. But nothing happened.
Was something wrong? Was this a fake? It couldn't be a fake since the one and only Pandora has this phenomenon.
They were now on the rooftop, holding out the gem up at the moon once again thinking that the glass was preventing the Pandora from working. Did it have to be straight up at the moon?
The thief didn't know. They just wanted to so-called power of this Pandora.
So they waited.
Waited for something to miraculously happen. Was it really just a myth? A story that someone just made up?
No, it had to be true! The thief didn't want all their hard work to find this precious jewel to go in vain. They reached into their pocket and pulled out a pocket knife.
What if all they needed was the red gem inside?
The thief knelt on one knee, placing the gem on the rooftop floor. They raised the knife in the air ready to stab its way through the gem when a flashing light blinded the thief.
What if everyone was wrong about the Pandora?
What if everyone had misunderstood the myth all along?
What if the Pandora never granted the power of immortality but instead something much worse than that?
It was said that the Pandora was blessed and protected by the Goddess of Time, Kali. Many mortals heard about the grand powers that the jewel granted and decided to turn a blind eye to the consequences once wishing on the Pandora.
Kali protected the jewel from the humans' evil and greedy nature. Those with evil in their heart would be punished for their actions while those with purity would be granted a wish.
The night when the moon shined brightly on Kali, a volley comet flew through the sky, and tears fell on Pandora. With those holy tears from a Goddess, the Pandora was blessed that night. Wishing that whoever got a hold of this sacred piece would be someone with a pure soul.
Years passed and the jewel was instantly found. However, just like Kali's wishes had said, those who had evil in their heart were instantly punished with bad luck. Whether it was a financial loss, property stolen, or even death.
Humans called this stone a cursed jewel but some were able to receive good results by having the Pandora in their grasp and eventually, it ended up in a museum. Only for it to be stolen and broken into many shard pieces.
Consequences for those actions were taken immediately. But nobody would've thought that those close to the person would also receive the same consequences.
The night was peaceful when it all happened. The people of Japan were already in their beds, or maybe working night shifts. Whether they were awake or not, a bright light surrounded them and without any noise, they were swept away completely unnoticed.
Whether it was luck or misfortune, it didn't matter. The damage was done. And now, they had to fix it.
