The hospital corridors are bathed in a fluorescent glow, the sharp scent of antiseptic lingering in the air. Dr. Kim Taehyung moves with a quiet authority, his every step measured, his presence demanding attention. His colleagues admire him, his patients trust him, but none truly know him.

Except for Emma.

Emma, a fellow doctor, is his contrast in every way. While he is distant, she is warm. While he speaks in calculated words, she fills the room with laughter. Her kindness draws people in, and despite his efforts, she has drawn him in too.

They are an unlikely pair, but for the past four years, they have belonged to each other in a way neither can explain.

==============

The rooftop of the hospital is their quiet escape. The wind tugs at Emma’s hair as she leans against the railing, staring out at the city. Taehyung stands beside her, his fingers grazing hers.

“Why do you always look at me like that?” she asks, tilting her head.

He doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he watches her, memorizing the curve of her lips, the way the city lights reflect in her eyes.

“Like what?” he finally says, voice low.

“Like you’re afraid of losing me.”

His softens. “Because I am.”

She smiles softly, but there’s something unreadable in her gaze. Taehyung hates that. He likes control—over his life, his choices, and most of all, over the things that matter. And Emma matters. More than she should.

Stop staring Tae, It's bad manners ” she teases, a soft smile on her lips. “What’s so fascinating?”

His fingers absentmindedly brush against hers, a small but deliberate touch.

“Everything,” he murmurs.

Emma laughs, shaking her head. “You’re terrible at compliments, you know that?”

Taehyung doesn’t respond immediately. Instead, he reaches out for her, pulling her into his arms His touch is featherlight, almost reverent.

“I just don’t know how to put it into words,” he admits.

Her teasing fades into something softer, something deeper. “Then don’t,” she whispers. “Just stay with me.”

A flicker of emotion crosses Taehyung’s face—something raw, something unspoken.

“I always will.”

But then Emma’s phone vibrates in her pocket. She glances at the screen and immediately stiffens. It’s her father.

She steps away to answer, but Taehyung watches her closely. Her expression shifts from curiosity to concern, then to barely concealed panic.

“What happened?” His voice is soft but, demanding.

She swallows hard before looking at him. “It’s my grandfather. He… he’s not well. The doctors say he doesn’t have much time left. He’s asking for me.”

Silence hangs between them.

Emma’s grandfather practically raised her. She’s always spoken about him with deep affection, and Taehyung knows how much this means to her.

“I have to go home,” she says, her voice trembling. “Tonight.”

Taehyung studies her, his grip on the railing tightening. He doesn’t like this—her leaving, the uncertainty of when she’ll be back.

But he can’t stop her.

“Okay, I’ll drive you to the station.”

The train station is buzzing with movement, but to Taehyung, everything else fades away except for Emma. She stands before him, her bags packed, eyes filled with emotions she doesn’t voice.

“I’ll come back soon,” she reassures him, reaching for his hand.

Taehyung grips her fingers tightly, pulling her closer. “You better.” His voice is firm, but there’s an underlying plea in it. “Call me as soon as you reach.”

“I will.”

A moment passes between them, filled with the weight of unspoken words. Then, as the train whistle blows, Emma gives him one last lingering look before stepping onto the train.

Taehyung watches as she disappears inside, his chest tightening in a way he can’t quite explain.

Something about this moment feels different.

Like she’s slipping away from him.

A Departure That Feels Like Goodbye

============

That night, Taehyung sits in his apartment, staring at his phone. Emma’s last text reads: Just reached. I’ll call you in the morning.

But sleep doesn’t come easy.

For the first time in years, an unsettling thought creeps into his mind.

What if she doesn’t come back?

And if she doesn’t… how far will he go to bring her back?
