Chapter 3: Reincarnation
Bill was unconscious for the next two days. They were running low on food. Their spirits were slowly dissolving. Robert was getting agitated just sitting around doing nothing. Robert stood up and walked over to Bill. He was on a pallet on the floor, still unconscious.
“Come on buddy. You have to wake up. I don't think I can get through this without you man. Vietnam was nothing compared to this.” Robert whispered to Bill. Bill's body twitched and then his breathing slowly got lighter and lighter until he stop breathing completely. Robert checked his pulse. Bill was gone. Robert began to feel his eyes begin to fill with tears, but he knew he had to be strong. He couldn't let his wife, his son Jaydyn, and his knew son Damien see him cry. Robert knew that if he couldn't stay strong there was no hope. Still Robert couldn't keep the tears from falling. His best friend since he was thirteen had just died right in front of him.
Robert stammered to his feet and walked over to Damien. Damien looked up at him. Robert gave him a slight nod. Damien knew what just happened. He'd been anticipating it ever since the encounter in the kitchen. Damien wasn't even phased. Damien truly didn't care. He thought since he father didn't care anymore, he wouldn't either.
Damien heard a rustling where Bill was. He looked past Robert and his eyes widened. Damien's entire face went white. Robert's heart began to beat fiercely. Robert didn't know what Damien was looking at, but he knew it couldn't be good. He slowly turned. Bill had stood up with his back to Robert and Damien.
“Oh my god, Bill!” Shrieked Mona who had no idea that Bill had even passed. She was overjoyed to see that Bill had awoken from unconsciousness. Bill's eyes were stuck in the back of their sockets, blood poured from his mouth as he gurgled like a starvation stricken madman. It suddenly occurred to Mona that something was wrong.
Then the scream came. Bill let out a scream that was beyond the scope of human comprehension. A scream that would make even Satan's blackened heart skip a beat. Mona stopped dead in her tracks. She was running towards him when she actually gazed into his sunken eyes.
Bill then crouched and with one swift, jungle cat like movement, he pounced. Mona wasn't even given the chance to let out even the beginning of a scream. Bill had her pinned down to the ground and was sawing through her neck. He was cutting through her skin and muscle like butter with his razor sharp and now drenched red teeth. Mona died almost instantly.
He had nearly torn her head clean off when Robert finally took action. Robert had been stunned frozen, but now he was aware that everyone in that room's life was in danger. He shot a round into Bill's chest with his 8-gauge. Bill's body flew into a closet. The smell of blood and gunpowder filled the room, the odor was unbearable. Robert ran to the closet and bolted the door closed in case of anymore unwanted reincarnations.
Robert slowly walked over to his now dead wife and knelt next to her. He closed her empty eyes, but her head snapped at his hand. He pushed her head down and held it there. Bill had severed her spine, so she couldn't move from the neck down and Bill was amazed she could even do that. Robert's eyes again filled with tears. “Twice.” He cried out. “Twice.....”
For the second time in less than two minutes someone Robert loved had died right in front of him. Jaydyn slowly walked over to his mother.
“Mom..,” he said blankly, “see you in hell.” With these words he placed a single round into his mother's forehead.
“WHAT THE HELL!” Yelled Robert in anger and sorrow. He grabbed at his son, but Jaydyn pushed his father down and got on top of him, pinning him to the floor.
“She was one of them.” Jaydyn replied coldheartedly as he continued to hold his father down. Robert was struggling to get Jaydyn off him, but in his anger and sadness he didn't have the strength to push him off.
“SHE WAS STILL YOUR MOTHER!” Screamed Robert, a shriek of desperation muddled by the tears streaming down his face. Jaydyn let his father up and walked over to the chair next to the closet. He sat down and removed the magazine from his pistol. He placed a in new .45 round and slammed the mag into the receiver.
“Yeah......she was, but not anymore.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robert wiped the tears from is face.
“You've got a messed up since of humor, God.” He said the word god sarcasticly. He never hated anyone before, but he thought if things didn't change soon, he might make an exception.
Noises started coming from behind the closet. It had been at least half and hour since Robert shot Bill. Robert was amazed the shot from the 8-gauge hadn't killed him. Jaydyn chuckled. He started to whistle as if he was enjoying himself.
“Jaydyn.” Damien said, surprising both Jaydyn and Robert.
“Yeah?” replied Jaydyn.
“Open the closet.” He said blankly as he raised a Desert Eagle toward the door. A huge grin spread across Jaydyn's face.
“Sure thing.” He said as he opened the door with a quick jerk of his wrist. Bill ran straight at Damien who was sitting in a chair directly in front of the closet door. Bill was in mid stride when he fell suddenly to the ground. Damien dropped the gun at his feet and began to shake. He hugged himself to try and stay calm, but it wasn't working.
He sank down into the chair and looked at the back of his hand. He was shaking so hard he could barely make out the shape of the veins pulsating with the rhythm of his heart beats. He wanted to feel sad for his father, but he realized he was actually glad his father was dead. He thought about everything that he probably lost or will be lost. He thought about school, his friends, and mostly about the rest of the world. He wanted to just crawl into a dark corner and hide from the pain that was steadily descending onto him.
Damien had never believed life was supposed to be fair, but why this? Why him? He double over the arm of the chair, the contents of his stomach spilling onto the floor.
“Screw this.” He said as he stood up from the chair, wiping his mouth with his shirtsleeve. He made up his mind right then. He wasn't going to just give up. He was going to survive this or die in the heat of battle.
“I'm not gonna die.” He said, picking up his weapon. “Not yet at least.”
“Damn straight.” Said Jaydyn, a glint of excitement in his eyes.
“We gotta find a better place to hold up and we need a plan.” Damien stated. “I think I've got an idea.”
“Well spit it out.” Robert said with anger. “And we won't just survive this, we'll fight back. I plan on killing every last one of these son's of bitches.”
“That's the spirit!” Jaydyn yelled jumping to his feet.
“What I have in mind is risky, but it's worth it. There's an abandoned warehouse on 57th street. It's only got two entrances and it's sturdy and defendable. First, we get a school bus. I saw an empty one on our way to the house. We get survivors on board if we see any. We need all the help we can get. We load up the ammo and guns. Then we head to Cost-Co. We stock up on food and water.
“Then we head back to the warehouse. If we can we head back to get other supplies. But that's not that important. We stay there until help comes for as long as we can.”
“Sounds good, but what if there are crazy bastards already inside the Cost-Co?” Robert asked.
“We kill em' all.” Said Jaydyn with excitement radiating from his very being.
“Then lets get going.” Damien said with a smirk.” Wait....what am I becoming? He thought to himself as the smile quickly faded from his face.
