**BOOK 1 IN THE TALES FROM DROMISSE SERIES**
Silvia considers herself the luckiest woman in all Dromisse. Her soon-to-be fiancé, Duncan Ora, is a candidate for Light Within, the greatest gift that the Almighty Gale can bestow upon someone. Then a ra...
"William, please." Jill grasps William's shoulders. "Let's help him. Let's help him through his punishment. I don't want this to end like how it ended with your brother!"
"He ain't repentant." William shifts his poisonous glower onto Jill. "What good would we be doin' by housin' him here? We would only be enablin' him."
"William."
"The Council does not eagerly pass out this punishment." William steps away from Jill. "I ain't have my family tarnished like this. First my brother, now ..." He curls his fingers into trembling fists. "Get. Out."
"Ma, Pa, I know about—" Duncan cuts off as William, standing a little taller and broader than him, seizes his coat.
"You are dead to me!" William yanks Duncan close. "Do y'all understand?! You ain't my son!"
"William, don't hurt him!" Jill grasps William's arm, but William throws her against the wall. She crumples to the floor.
"Ma!" Duncan shoves William with all his force, and the two are thrown apart. He crouches by Jill. "Are you hurt?"
Jill pushes upright, tears streaming down her face. "No, I ain't." Her breathing quickens. "Duncan—"
"INFIDEL! VILE DARK WITHIN! DRAGON!" William roars. He grabs a fistful of Duncan's long hair. "GET OUTTA MA HOUSE!" He throws Duncan through the front door.
Duncan splatters across the porch, his scalp throbbing. The door slams shut behind him. He lays in a heap as blown drops of rain soak his coat and his face. He has to tell them, eventually. He has to tell them that he knows ... he knows the secret they've kept from him. He's Rimis. And they need to know that everyone else in the world now knows. At least it will be a while before the news trickles out to his remote hometown. There's still time.
His blue-haired disguise washes over him, and he slowly picks himself up, trudging down bowed wooden stairs. He caps his fedora on his head, putting it at an angle. He'll leave, let his father cool off, then he'll come back and talk to them and pray they listen ...
Pray.
Pray to who?
Pray to Gale, who let all this happen?
Pray to Gale, the god who let Johnny walk free, who let Silvia die, who let Duncan's life spiral into a deeper hell than he ever thought possible?
Boom, says the bubbling thundercloud overhead. The storm leaps inside of him, whipping into an electrical rage, surging through his veins like copper wires. But he thinks of Silvia, guiding the lightning through the rod of her memory. Hold the storm in, and don't let it out.
Don't ever let it out.
Dragons go to Hell
When we were born, Gale masked our memories of the life we shared with him, called the Life Before. This is because we were all heinous sinners, and if we remembered what we did, we would be unconditionally damned. We would never be able to return to live with Gale.
This story is about a lizard who thought his memories might make him something more.
He was surrounded by other lizards, and he was taught to act like a lizard. He was raised by a mother lizard and father lizard. He had lizard grandparents, cousins, and friends. He was taught the good word of Gale. Yet, he always felt like he was missing something.
When he got older, his curiosity only grew. His parents spoke of something called a Life Before, but what was it? They said that he couldn't ever remember the Life Before, or he would be condemned by Gale. But it was maddening, knowing there were things about himself that he'd forgotten.
Why had Gale done this? Could he be something more? What didn't he know? He resolved to uncover his memories despite the warnings of his friends and family.
