Through the Gap in the Wall

A story where two strangers are in imprisonment cells next to one another, a small crack on the furthest wall allows them to easily communicate with one another and interact (eg. handing notes through it, food, other small trinkets, also occasionally whispering to one another during the night.) They are often taken to a room for testing, though neither of them knows a clear reason why they are being tested or for what.

Ideas:

- One of the captives [or both] is half-dragon (or some other fantastical creature. Or perhaps no fantasy creature, but were exposed to some sort of radioactivity) and therefore they do know why they are being tested, but neither knows the reason for the other to be there

- The relationship will be left up to interpretation, it will not be clear whether or not it is romantic or platonic, but the relationship will be very close between the two, with both of them agreeing they want to escape together and hide from their tormentors in society together

- They will make a plan to escape near the end of the story, where they break out together and find refuge on a secluded island far from society

- Perhaps the story ends when their halfway through the escape, but with guards catching up to them, or as they get to a gate/ocean and realize they won't survive another day after this

- Or the story ends as their planning, but one of the characters grows ill, and doesn't tell the other, agreeing to execute the plan with their partner, but then they turn to the window, with some thoughts about how they won't even survive the night because of how ill they are

- Or the story ends the night before their escape, with a scene where the person testing on them tells the guards that the prisoners are no longer of use to him, and may be disposed of.
