"she said she'll find a ride," bailey informed liam as she buckled her seatbelt after he got ilyas in the backseat, now turning the ignition on to take the road home

"cool," he nodded "fun night, huh?" he asked slightly sarcastic

bailey glanced at the rear-view mirror, seeing ilyas with his head against the seat, his eyes closed "i don't know what got into him, he's never done this before."

"always a first for everything," liam shrugged, eyes focused on the road

she looked over at him for a split second, wanting to fill the air with some type of conversation... but nothing could really come to mind. the night had been great! they'd made small talk and he was close to her... it made her feel tingly inside. but why were the gaps hard to fill during conversation?

they took a turn onto a deserted road, since the beach had been far out of the town center and liam noticed someone walking down the side of the road.

he furrowed his brows as he slowed down the car, the pink dress and red hair seemed familiar - it was the quiet, moody girl from the party.

"what?" bailey asked, noticing the car slowing down

liam didn't answer though, opening the window and leaning his elbow out on the edge

"hey, you okay?"

mia stopped suddenly, looking to the side. it was the teens her friends were getting along with at the bonfire - but she didn't know them.

"um, yep. just walking home."

"how far is home?" bailey asked

"it's not far," mia lied, shaking her head. she was freezing, and she hated walking in the dark, but she didn't know these people enough to get in a car with them.

"you sure? we're on the way to town, we can drop you off if you give us directions," bailey smiled politely

mia glanced at liam who was looking at her with a casual grin, she fought an eye roll - she hated these type of guys. the way he held himself screamed 'i've got money so i'm better than you'.

"listen, it's getting dark i'd be scared walking home right now, we really don't mind,"

a part of liam was a little disappointed about the fact that this girl was out walking in the dark, he wanted to spend some alone time with bailey and the drive seemed like a good opportunity.

mia hesitantly sighed in defeat, heading to the back door to get in the car

"where about do you live?" liam asked "i used to come here during the summer so i know my way around,"

"um, 200 front street." she told him

"okay our place is on the way..."

"you could just drop me and ilyas off and then drive... mia?"

the red-head nodded slowly and the braided-haired girl returned a smile

"i'm bailey, this is liam and the snoring dude beside you is ilyas,"

mia smiled shortly and nodded, her eyes moving back to the window as the drive continued.

liam couldn't help but glance in the rear-view mirror while he drove, noticing how mia played with her necklace.

"you can help me getting ilyas to the couch, no point going upstairs," bailey suggested as they pulled up at the beach house.

liam and bailey got out of the car - bailey saying goodbye to mia and how it was nice to meet her before draping ilyas' arm around her while his other was around liam.

the three walked into the house, dropping ilyas onto the couch as he groaned and turned on his side

"trash can," bailey remembered, quickly heading to the kitchen to get it so she could place it beside the couch so he could use it throughout the night.

liam looked at her "you gonna be okay?"

"oh yeah, ilyas is gonna protect me if anything," she joked

he shook his head with a chuckle "alright, i'll see you in a bit."

"be nice to her!" bailey whispered "she seems like she's had a rough night."

"yeah, yeah, i'll be a gentleman," liam winked. bailey blushed.

he walked out of the house, heading to the car again. mia was still seated in the back and he turned around to look at her

"you can come sit in the front you know?"

mia suddenly whipped her head around at him as if he'd interrupted her thoughts.

"oh, um, okay..."

she got out, moving to the passenger seat and he turned the engine on once more, driving down the road towards her address.

the ride was extremely silent. mia didn't mind silence, but she felt weird being with someone she didn't know. also dressed like this. why did she let her friends convince her that going to that stupid bonfire was a good idea? she didn't have fun at all... but she didn't want to be the buzzkill once again, the one who missed something funny that happened or something important. so, she put on this dress that made her feel like she was barely wearing anything, wore her hair down when all she wanted to do was tie it back up and went to a bonfire filled with drunk kids from her school thinking about how good it would feel to be back in her room with her book at that exact moment.

mia was so into her thoughts that she didn't even realize the car coming to a slow stop on a street that wasn't hers. she furrowed her brows in confusion when she saw liam get out, opening the trunk and coming back with a blue zipped up sweater and handing it to her.

he saw how she glanced at the sweater then up at him in confusion.

"you've been shivering since i first saw you." liam told her gently

mia didn't realize that he'd actually paid attention... she's felt invisible the entire night - and every day.

she reached for the sweater and put it on, feeling warmth flow through her. it was way too big but the bagginess made her feel more comfortable. she tugged the sleeves over her hands and held it close to her. when she inhaled, she could smell the scent of fresh grass and vanilla... an odd combination that somehow worked.

liam checked the time, it wasn't that late and he was sort of starving... there wasn't anything at the house seeing as they'd gone out for dinner but he didn't eat much seeing as he spent the entire time teasing bailey over sushi...

"you hungry?"

mia glanced at him "um... i don't know, sort of i guess."

"you okay with stopping to get some food? there's a diner further down the street."

"juliana's?" she couldn't help but light up a little at the thought of that diner, she loved it there. it was one of the best places to read.

liam cracked a smile, glancing at her as he kept driving "yeah,"

"okay," mia nodded
