As I sat down to have the mehendi applied to my hands, my heart pounded with a mixture of anticipation and dread. The pretty patterns being painted on my skin seemed to reflect my emotions.

Beside me Maa said properly, her eyes betraying the concern she is feeling for me. With each stroke of the mehendi brush, I found myself gathering the courage to speak what had been weighing heavily on my mind.

"Maa," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the noises of activity around us. "I can't go through with this wedding."

I pleaded with my eyes for her to understand. With each word, I felt a knot tightening in my chest, the weight of tradition and expectation bearing down on me. My fingers trembling with emotions.

"Maa, you can do this. Only YOU" I said, my voice hesitant.

"But why sweetheart? You've come a long way." She spoke in a concerning voice. "I know, but I don't love him. I can't spend my life with someone I don't love."

"Well, your Papa and Bhai has told me everything about Aarav, the person you Love . They went to meet him. Didn't they? But he didn't come." She said exaggerating the word love.

I nodded and lowered my head. "On top of that, you too went to meet him and waited for around an hour. But he didn't come, did he?" My eyes met her. I am shocked. How does she know that I went to meet him.

"How do you know-" She cut me off by "Beta maa hu tumhari, mujhe pata nahi hoga to kise pata hoga." I smiled at her response.

Suddenly my phone buzzed with an incoming message, which was placed beside me. I glanced at it and saw his name - Aarav.

I quickly asked the artists to pause and took the phone in my hand. I opened with message.

Where are you? It said.

Her brows furrowing in anger as she caught sight of his name on my phone screen and I could sense her disapproval.

I was about to type something, but Maa placed her hands on my shoulder and nodded her head as no.

With a heavy sigh, she spoke. Her voice filled with anger as well as concern. "Why is he messaging you? After everything he put you through..."

"Last chance Maa" I said looking at her and as soon as her eyes met mine, it softened. "It's time to move on beta." She said and signaled the artists to continue. But my expressions didn't change.
