Kindred Spirit

2 1 1

As we left our childhood behind,
And threw out blue hats into the sky,
We promised the friends we made,
Wouldn't be lost on the way,
Into our adult lives,
We thought we could be the ones to make it,
Oh, what fools we were.

As is often the case,
Life had other plans for us,
We began to drift apart,
Like snowflakes in the wind,
Once best friends with entwined lives,
Have now become strangers,
With separate lives.

The years flew by,
In just a few blinks,
I feel more than ever before,
I no longer have those friends,
That I thought I would still have,
I was destined to be alone,
Until I found my Kindred Spirit,
In someone like you.

We met on a writing app,
Where I did nothing but post,
Silly little quotes that didn't matter,
I thought I didn't deserve,
The attention nor praise,
I couldn't find beauty in my stories,
Since they weren't my own.

You sent me a message,
Singing praises for the stories,
You saw beauty in them,
Where I could not,
You saw a talent in me,
That I would've never seen.

It has only been a few years,
And, oh, how wonderful it has been,
You've become so much to me,
The light in my darkness,
The hope for my future,
My love for myself,
The beauty in my writing,
I wouldn't be here without you,
You've opened me to so many things.

Our friendship can't be described,
It's only understood through us,
A bond unlike any other,
While I wish I could be,
With you on your special day,
I hope this poem shows,
Just how much I care for you,
Happy birthday, my dearest friend,
My sister,
My Kindred Spirit.
