Chapter 1: Earth Skills

 feel the sun on my face. I see trees all around me, the scent of wildflowers on a breeze. It's so beautiful. In this moment, I'm not stranded in space. It's been 97 years since a nuclear apocalypse killed everyone on Earth, leaving the planet simmering in radiation. Fortunately, there were survivors. 12 nations had operational space stations at the time of the bombs. There is now only the Ark, one station forged from the many. We're told the Earth needs another 100 years to become survivable again. Four more space-locked generations, and man can go home, back to the ground. The ground, that's the dream. This is reality. Reality sucks

"Prisoner 143 get up and face the wall "A guard commands barging into my cell

I do as he says and stand up to face the dark grey wall. He walks over to me and I feel a pinch on my wrist. I look over to see a metal bracelet clamped onto my arm.

"What is that?" I ask confused. He ignores me and grabs my arm shoving me into the hallway. I see many of the other prisoners also being dragged through the hall all with the same bracelet clamped to their wrist.

"What's happening?" I ask now frantic

He ignores me again and I am soon shoved into what looks like a small metal ship. There are tons of other kids that look my age and younger strapped into seats. He points me to a seat and once I'm sitting he straps me in and walks out of the ship.

I turn to the two boys strapped to the wall behind me "what are we doing in here?" I ask confused

"We're going to earth" The Asian boy explains

"What? Why?" I ask still trying to process what he just said

"We have no idea. Maybe it's finally safe enough for us to be there" The other boy answers "I'm jasper by the way" He says

"I'm Monty" The Asian boy says with a small wave

"Katherine...But you can call me Kat" I tell them before turning back around to see a boy has been seated next to me.

He flashed a smile at me and started to speak "What's a pretty girl like you doing here?"

I shrug "I'm a criminal just like you..." I pause not knowing his name

"Atom" he says introducing himself "and your Kat right?" He asks obviously having heard my previous conversation with Monty and Jasper.

I nod

"Got any friends on this ship?" He asks

"Not likely, Most of my friends in the sky box we're floated when they turned eighteen I turn eighteen in about a week so I guess it doesn't matter if we die of radiation poisoning on earth because I was going to die anyways" I shrug

"Well I don't have any friends on here either so I guess we should be friends" he says with a cheesy smile

I chuckle but before I can respond the drop ship door slams shut and it starts to shake. A video starts to play on a screen attached to the wall. A message from Chancellor Jaha appears and explains to us that we are being sent down to Earth because we're expendable. He also mentions that if we cooperate our crimes will be forgiven. The last thing he says before the video cuts out is that we need to find mount weather which has supplies inside.

We feel the drop ship launch and suddenly everyone feels weightless. A boy I know as Finn Collins un buckles himself and starts to float around the ship. People are cheering him on. This encourages two other boys to do the same.

"Get back in your seat" A blonde girl yells at the three boys.

Finn floats over to talk to her.
