On Task

God damn it, why can't you just do what you're told for once in your life? That's what he said to you. He said a lot of other stuff too, but you know he didn't mean any of that. You were being much too stubborn, and he was just trying to make you see that. Your creator loves you, doesn't he? He said you were a family. Family is supposed to love each other. You do your tasks, and in exchange he lets you stay here.

But what if you actually can't do what you're told?

Not like it matters.

He wouldn't understand...

MePhone3GS stared out of his window. The land outside was covered in a layer of bright white, almost like the earth was glowing. Snow was really pretty, but 3GS didn't want to go out in it. If it was cold enough for the rain to freeze, it was far too cold for any sane person to be walking around outside.

There was a knock on the door. 3GS turned around and went to answer it.

"Good morning," He said blankly as he opened the door. "Do you need something?

The visitor was a fairly tall blonde guy with patchy facial hair. His name was Trophy, wasn't it? 3GS mostly saw him announcing when he was going on a jog.

"Okay... it's not morning, but Pepper told me to come get you," Trophy replied, arms crossed. "We're putting up decorations for the party tomorrow and she's tellin' me you wanted to help."

3GS' eyes lit up. A task! He never thought he'd be saying this, but he actually missed those. Wandering aimlessly without anything to do made him feel really lazy and useless.

"I did say that!" He beamed uncontrollably. Trophy's face scrunched up.

"You can smile?" He mumbled, mostly to himself.

"Yes, I can... Why are you so concerned about that, exactly?"

"I dunno, maybe because you've been walkin' around death-glaring everybody for two weeks? Seriously, dude, you have the worst resting bitch face I've seen on anybody."

"What?"

"We need to go," Trophy said instead of explaining what on earth "resting bitch face" meant. "Pepper's probably gonna get all pissed off if we don't do any work. You don't wanna see Pepper when she's all pissed."

3GS nodded aggressively, then the two started walking towards the stairs. Trophy walked really fast. Like, really fast! 3GS was hesitant to even call it walking, but that might have just been because he'd spent all his time existing again trudging around and getting lost in the hotel. He desperately needed to regain his efficiency, and maybe this task would help with that.

MePhone3GS finished putting up a folding table and smiled. This whole decorating thing was really fun, and surprisingly quiet. Pepper and Trophy were very focused and only talked when giving instructions, or when OJ came in to check on their work. It was all very familiar to 3GS. More like Meeple than things had been so far. It made 3GS happy.

Suddenly, the sound of a default alarm blared from Pepper's phone. She shut it off, then turned to 3GS and Trophy.

"Time for a break!" She announced. "You got twenty minutes!"

Trophy nodded, dropped everything he was doing without hesitation, then approached MePhone3GS.

"Hey, you wanna go get a snack or something?" He asked. 3GS didn't respond. He was too busy processing the fact there was a break. He never got breaks! Mr. Cobs didn't approve of him slacking off for even a moment! But it would be rude to not agree to Trophy's request...
