The DIY Holiday

Spread out a few times over fifty-two weeks,

Occasions come round when your happiness peaks;

Where presents are given and fireworks boom,

And festive décor livens up every room.

Then adding some tastes and some seasonal scents,

These regular days become epic events;

The type you look forward to year after year,

In all of their glory and holiday flair.

Yet sadly, despite all the joy that they bring,

There's one tiny issue; one frustrating thing:

The days we've allotted to celebrate stuff,

Are too few for comfort; not nearly enough.

From one to the next it's quite often the case,

That time seems to slow to a turtle-like pace;

With days plodding on, uneventful and bland.

Not dreadful exactly but not at all grand.

But don't feel you have to accept such a fate;

Instead get to work on erasing the wait.

Get more celebrations with one simple fix:

Invent some new days for the holiday mix.

So not wasting time let's get started right now!

I'll share what I know and start teaching you how.

Just grab a few pens and a pad off your shelf,

And make a new holiday; Do it yourself!

To get the ball rolling you'll need to work out,

The thing that your new celebration's about;

Like cooking fresh cookies or climbing old trees,

Or flying pink kites on a midsummer breeze.

You'll want something festive that sells lots of cards,

Or something that folks can enjoy in their yards.

As long as it's cheery, exciting and fun,

You'll bump up the odds that you hit a homerun.

The reason established what's next to prepare,

Is when your occasion occurs in the year;

Selected at random like June 23rd,

Or picked for the season and weather preferred.

Wherever you put it, whatever the date,

You're adding a day that's especially great.

So calendar ready, don't stress and just choose;

There's no way at all you could possibly lose!

What's next to decide is how far or how near,

The limits extend on your holiday's cheer.

Are jollies confined to your city or town?

Or every square inch from the Arctic and down?

Consider the pros and the cons with some care,

To land on the scale that best fits your affair;

So local or global it rocks just the same,

At just the right size with appropriate fame.

The where sorted out, what you'll need to do now,

Is put in the work to determine the how;

The customs that speak to your holidays tone,

That mark it as special and make it well-known.

Come up with traditions like wearing all blue,

Exchanging fresh apples and strawberries too.

Add miniature light shows at home after dark,

Ensuring each year that your day makes a mark.

At this point in time you should feel pretty glad,

And proud of the notes you've compiled in your pad.

Your brainstorming finished, the hard part is done.

What's left to do now is kick back and have fun.

The day you've now made should be holiday gold,

That brings about joy to the young and the old.

The kind from deep down that I can't overstate.

You'll see for yourself. Pretty soon, just you...wait

More waiting...

So maybe one holiday won't change your lot.

But don't be discouraged, I tell you fear not!

There's no need at all to accept such a fate;

Start working instead on erasing the wait.

And yes this may all sound familiar to you,

But now like before it's still very much true.

Get more special days with that same trusty fix:

Make new celebrations to add mix!

So work on new whats and determine new wheres;

Make hows and some whens for your novel affairs.

As long as you're able to find a good date,

There's really no cap on the days you create.

Whenever you're free you can make a few more,

Make two at a time or perhaps even four.

Just grab a few pens and that pad off your shelf,

And make your own holidays; Do it yourself!
