Elspeth McKinnon was nowhere. The fading sound of laughter no longer echoing down the corridors. Her smile no longer brightening the manor's kitchen as she snuck a malted milk biscuit before tea. The manor was empty, left barren to rot as the blood soaked floorboards caved in on themselves. Shattered stained glass windows left to howl in the wind— the sun no longer shining kaleidoscopes through them. Perhaps the sun knew of that fateful night. The manor no longer held a need to shine.

Elspeth McKinnon was everywhere. In the rustling of tall grass; the splash of a lake. The quiet stillness of a graveyard. Hushed conversations over tea about the poor thing— the war had been dreadful, no one left unscathed, but there were none left alive as ravaged as the young girl from Braemar.
