The inspiration for the short story is from an actual happening in the city where I live now (a city somewhere in Europe) where the mayor's office actually organizes a simple funeral for people who have died alone and have no friends, family, or anybody else who is willing to take care of the funeral. Volunteers come and attend the funeral, with flowers, poems. I think it is a beautiful thing to do.
The story is also inspired by my own Chinese-Indonesian background (yes, the taboos I mentioned were actual ones told to me by my grandparents when I was growing up).
