He shrugs but I could see the lie. He's hiding the truth from Avalon.

" Dunno. He's grumpy around this time of the year. "

Accepting his reply, Avalon drags me to the other side of the cafeteria, and Caleb follows us. We take our seats. Caleb. Me. Avalon. This makes me happy. I hate sitting in the corner. It makes me feel cut out of any conversation and quite frankly it feels as if everyone is staring at me with judgment.

" What are you majoring in, Spanish girl? "

It seems I've gained a poor nickname.

" Catalina, " I attempt to correct but I know better. " I want to be a nurse. "

" What type? There are a variety of choices. "

I nod in agreement.

" A psychiatric nurse if possible. "

His eyes tell he's not too supportive of the matter. I giggle and he raises a brow in question.

" I won't go crazy. "

He laughs.

" I hope not. Shit can get scary in that field. "

I agree.

" I know, but I want to help them. "

His eyes soften making him appear gentle. I stared into his eyes for a hot second before breaking contact when my heartbeat started to run a mile. My cheeks started to burn when his stare didn't shift.

" Gabriel and Blake are in class, " Avalon whines, stealing our attention.

I breathe a sigh and invest myself in her situation.

" You'll catch a break together, Ava. You know this, " Caleb comforts.

She pouts in petty sadness and we could only laugh at the hopeless romantic. Imagining myself like this made me cringe internally. I could never be this invested in my partner.

" Well, I'm hungry. Is anyone up for burgers? "

" Too much calories, " Ava replies.

I look at her like she said the stupidest shit.

" What are you? A cow to eat just vegetables? "

Avalon gapes and Caleb snorts in laughter.

" I'm cutting, Latina. "

I roll my eyes and look back at him, smiling.

" I'll take you up on that offer. They do have chilly sauce, right? "

I swear I'm going to scream at someone if anybody stares at me like I'm crazy again. He looks past me to Avalon in question.

" Is this a Spanish thing? "

" I speak Spanish. I'm not a Spaniard. " I bite.

" Yes, it's a Spanish thing, " Avalon chirped.

I dagger her with my eyes.

" It's not a Spanish thing, " I hissed.

Caleb gets up to break the tension. I get up after him and shoot Avalon a last glare before following behind him. We walk over to the canteen in peaceful silence. When we reach the short line of people, I turn to him.

" How many of you are there? "

His brows furrow.

" The blac--"

I fluster.

" No! Oh my god, that sounded so racist. I'm sorry, " I whisper.

He chuckles.

" No prop. "

" I mean like how many more people are in the group? "

He takes hold of his chin and ponders on it for a second that I'm appalled he can't remember on the spot. Doesn't he remember their names?

" Blake, Gabriel, " he sticks out fingers in counting, " Aiden and Ava. Plus me, it's five. Six now. "

I smile at the thought. It makes me gleeful that I have so many friends already. Maybe not Blake but like Avalon said I shouldn't pay attention to him. Even Caleb warned me to stay away from him in a sugar-coated version. I can't believe someone is that bad that even his friends warn off the girls. Swallowing down my nerves, I feel my stomach tighten and my heart pick up speed.

" You're thinking, huh? "

I blink and flush, avoiding eye contact.

" I'm just glad to have gained friends on such short notice. "

He grins and bumps a fist gently against my arm. My smile peeks its warmth.

" You're attractive and nice. A rare quality, so don't stress about making friends. You'll make a lot of those. "

I happily accept the compliment and return the fist bump.

" Thanks. You're not too bad yourself. "

He winks at me.

" Of course. I'm Caleb Blevins, an irresistible basketball player. "

" Go on with that attitude and I might stop breathing at how much space your ego takes up. "

We burst out laughing.

This is nice. My second day couldn't be more perfect. Avalon was by my side nearly 24/7 and a smug boy who has accepted me. Maybe my decision to fly to Swansea wasn't such a bad idea after all. My smile was big when I greeted the old lady and it looked like I sparked a happiness in her at my warm greeting.

We ended up with double toppings with the prize of a single.
