Chapter 1
Arya Blake stood amidst a sea of elegant gowns and tailored suits, her hand nestled comfortably in the crook of Alexei Petrov's arm. They navigated the grand ballroom with practised grace, their smiles dazzling and their presence commanding. To outsiders, they epitomised the picture-perfect couple — an enchanting union of two young diplomats bound by love. She had wanted this since she was a child; a career in diplomacy, the allure of it all - cocktail parties, fundraising galas, the blurring of the lines between a heated political discussion and a friendly conversation - and a boyfriend that would make others envious. Now, she had it all, yet she felt unfulfilled. Being a Jamaican diplomat in Europe had left her feeling disconnected from her true passions and the deeper purpose she sought. She chose this career to be a changemaker, to leave a positive mark on the world, but her current work-life was characterised by nothing but rigid protocols, paperwork, and superficial glamour. During a brief lull in the music, Arya's facade crumbled, her smile faltering. Alexei noticed the change and turned his attention to her, concern etched upon his face.
"Milaya." It was a Russian term of endearment that Alexei often used. "What's wrong?" His deep voice was laced with worry, and his accent when he spoke in English was slight. "Do you want to leave?" Alexei was super caring, Arya loved that about him.
"I don't feel happy here right now, this all just seems so... fake," Arya replied, looking around almost scornfully.
Alexei chuckled lightly, "Nothing but a little imposter syndrome."
"No, I just-, I-, forgive me if I sound ungrateful, but I feel so unfulfilled. Like this," Arya gestured all around, "It feels wrong to be here right now in this expensive dress, knowing there are people back home who can't even afford to eat. I feel selfish and useless." Arya was choking up.
Alexei nodded in understanding, "Okay, so a lot of imposter syndrome. Do you want to go home? We can have some wine and talk about this more privately..."
Arya looked around before nodding 'yes' almost apologetically.
Arya's apartment in Geneva was grand and classy with large glass windows that allowed the evening sky to create a deep azure ambience in the living room. Arya sat on a sofa, and Alexei, after hanging his jacket by the door, brought over a bottle of wine, and two wine glasses from the kitchen. He set them down on the glass table before sitting, "So tell me, what's this about you feeling useless?" He poured Arya a glass before himself.
This was only one of the ways in which Alexei made Arya feel safe. He listened to her and supported her emotionally. He also possessed a threatening presence, standing at around six feet five inches, with a strong build, meaning he was scary to most, but to Arya, only perfect for bear hugs.
Arya trusted Alexei, so sharing with him was easy. "I just feel like as a Jamaican diplomat in Europe, my role lacks meaning and fails to leverage my skills and expertise. I need a sense of purpose, to make a tangible impact on the world. The last thing I thought I'd get from this career is a routine, yet that's what I have. I feel unchallenged and, for lack of a better word, bored."
"Do you want to change careers?"
"No. I mean, look at you, you get to do meaningful and exciting things. I just want my diplomatic career to be more like yours."
"Arya, my country is at war. You should be grateful your career is not like mine. Each day I wake up in fear that it will be the last day of my career and I will have to return to Russia, leaving everything I've grown to love here behind."
"Yeah... I guess I should be grateful." Arya said, with a bitterness that escaped Alexei.
He offered her a small smile, before leaning over to kiss her forehead. "I don't ever want to leave you behind, Arya."
