Hellfire

I caught fire in your gaze.
The flames flickered in your embrace.
I got lost in the beauty of it all,
Oblivious to the whirlwind of sulfur slowly suffocating me.
You left me to burn alone in the hellfire you set,
And as you walked away the burning sensation seeped into my skin,
My numbness receding.
So I set fire to our memories,
And lit a cigarette from the embers,
Desperately scavenging for a piece of me to take from the ashes.
But fire cannot be controlled for long,
And slowly I am turning into dust.
Through the flames,
I make out your smile,
Sick and ghastly and sneering at my pain.
Whenever the flames wavered,
Your smile would return and douse me in gasoline,
Only to ignite the wick once more.
I can only hope that perhaps I am like a phoenix and from these ashes shall I be reborn.
And even though I am burning in what was once merely candlelight,
Dancing, enrapturing,
It was the look of condemnation in your smile as you walked away that is truly burning me.
