In my world your divided by a number of different things including fandom,au,city,fanon,canon,headanon,gender bent and other things I'm probably forgetting.
Within the country of fan fiction there are groups known as fandoms and the fandoms can have crossovers which either go great or terribly.
There's also the well known/popular people and not well known/no popular people . There's also people in the middle but usually this never happens.
