Hi, you may not know me, but my name is Melody.

I'm a normal human teenager who lives a normal human life, it's not really... exciting.

I live in a small town in a small house with just my mom and my step dad.

They... fight a lot.

Anyways, besides that, my life is just... plain ol' boring.

That is... until today.

Melody's POV

It's the year 2023, I'm sitting in my bed watching Season 1 episode 3 of Avatar the last Airbender at the early summer hours of 6:57 AM.

I decided that I was starting to get hungry after my long night of just trying my hardest to sleep, but ending up watching the rest of the last season of ATLA and restarting it on Season 1.

I got up out of my bed, stretched my limbs, and looked at myself in the mirror.

Yesterday I slit my eyebrow myself with my aunt guiding me on how to do it, and my mom got pissed.

So... that has been the topic she chose to get pissed on this week. Last week, she chose to get pissed about me forgetting to clean the yard because I was busy singing in my room to catch up on choir once the summer is over and I'm back in high school.

Not only has she been pissed, but my step douche has been pissed too... because I'm too lazy and just always watching shows. It's not my fault I don't want to be near him! like, c'mon!

I sighed, and decided to ignore my angsty thoughts, and snuck out of my room, heading into the kitchen.

Apparently my mom was in there, so I was about to turn around and sneak back into my room... but she turned around and saw me.

"Melody, what are you doing up this early? are you trying to get back into your school schedule, or did you stay up all night watching those stupid cartoons again?"

I cursed inside my mind, they aren't stupid cartoons! they mean a lot to me, and got me through shit.

I decided to lie, "yeah, mom... I'm getting back into my school schedule, I was getting myself something to eat." my mom looked at me with a scowl, and glared.

"I know when you lie, you were watching those cartoons again. how many times have I told you to get off that damn laptop and start going to sleep at regular hours?"

I decided to bite back. "well, maybe I would be going to sleep at regular hours if I had something that would help me better than melatonin gummies! mom, I've been telling you for weeks, I need to go to a doctor about my sleeping problems! I'm pretty sure I have insomnia."

And then, low and behold, she decided to bite back. "No, Melody, I'm trying to tell you it's those electronics you're on during the day."

...so I bit back harder. "Mom, you do realize lately I haven't been on them that much during the day, right? I've been reading and studying so I can get back into a steady schedule when I'm back at school! I've been practicing my voice for choir, I've been studying up more on math, and I've even practiced writing essays more! I'm trying so damn hard, and you NEVER go to my room and even look. you always think I'm lying! you always think I'm just being lazy and staying in my room, well, have you ever once thought that maybe I don't like coming out of my room because of the man you decided to marry? he's constantly ignoring me! and when he's not, he bitches about me just like you do! and-"

She spoke. "MELODY! Don't you even dare talk about your father like that." I thought, 'He's not my fucking father.'  She spoke once more. "and how dare you even speak to me like that? I try my hardest to provide for this family with your father, and you should know this by now. I have a headache, I don't want to hear your rambling, and besides, we should really point out the elephant in the room. your eyebrow! why would you even think of doing that to it? I birthed you out into this world to be someone good, not someone who messes up her face like a lunatic! I don't want you ending up like your aunt who helped you do this!"

I decided I had enough of this shit. "fine, I'm going back into my room where I'm not needed." I said, as I started to walk back into my room as I heard her yelling... but I just drowned it out, not paying attention to it. but one thing I was paying attention to was the tears currently rolling down my cheeks.

I closed my door behind me, as I jumped onto my bed and just... sobbed. I sobbed so hard I could've practically created a new ocean dubbed 'the depressed ocean.'

I could hear my mom and step douche starting to fight in the living room, but I tried my best to drown it out.

I just felt so... fucking hopeless. my own mom didn't really give a shit about me, my step dad didn't either, and they just... push all this shit on me without realizing that I'm breaking down.

I continued crying my eyes out with all the bottled up emotions I had sitting in my body these past weeks, and I glanced up at my laptop screen which had the current episode I was watching paused.

I started thinking... god, the real world sucks. you have to study for school, you have to deal with parents, you have to deal with mental stuff like depression, it all just... really sucks. Avatar the last Airbender had a much better world, even though they were currently going through a war.

I just... really wanted to be in that world.

I rolled over and glanced up at my ceiling... sighing.

"...I wish I lived in Avatar the last Airbender instead."

And after I muttered that sentence, a portal opened up from my laptop screen and I was just... sucked into it.

I screamed, hoping to get the attention of my mom and step dad... but I was too late.

I was already inside the portal, being transported wherever... I didn't even know where I was going, all I could see were... floating colors, dashing extremely fast... how fast was I going?

I went through what looked like another portal that opened up, and I fell into what looked like a bush.

Before I knew it, the portal closed, and I stood up rubbing my head from the slight fall...

I looked around, and realized...

I was at the Southern air temple.
