They starved and scavenged and prayed for nineteen months in the Canadian Wilderness. That was their story ever since they were rescued. It's what they told reporters, police officers, strange conspirators, therapists, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, partners, and children. Even after twenty-five years, they still told that short, summarized version to anyone who wanted to know what really happened. But they wouldn't be able to handle the truth. Hell, Isabelle still couldn't fully wrap her head around it, and she was there.
They try to be normal now. They try to forget or even cope. Natalie with drugs and alcohol and sex. Shauna with her boring husband who peaked in high school and her poor daughter who she doesn't even like. But no one as much as Isabelle, who can't forget what they did.
