When I turn my head up to face him, his eyes aren't stern like I thought they would be. Instead, his LED is yellow, and he doesn't seem to understand the magnitude of the words he just said. „What makes you think you have to protect me?"
His words come out slow, carefully chosen.
„I can get replaced, you can't."
A few hours later, I sit at my desk doing some files. I have my headphones on, music blasting. Hank signals Connor to come his way, and I don't recognize it as anything strange. The two of them talk about the case a lot, leaving me to do the boring work. But this time, I notice Connor looking at me, looking worried. I pause my music, and try my best to listen into them. Right now there is rush hour, many peoples shifts ending and starting, so there is plenty of noise around. I don't look their way, trying to sneakily listen in.
„She can't hear us- Y/N! Y/N!" Hank yells, „See, its fine-„ „Okay, Lieutenant. I get it."
Hanks voice lowers to a somewhat normal talking level, „So what the hell was that all about kid?"
„What?"
„I don't know, maybe you going all angry and defensive? Normally your just a goofy piece of shit."
„Hank, I was simply following protocol."
Hank scoffs, „Protocol of what? To go all bodyguard mode? She isn't weak, she can stand up for herself."
„I just didn't like the guy. He was getting very invasive of her space."
„Yeah, Connor. HER space. I don't think that was in your social programming at all. When you got here, you didn't give two shits if one of us got hurt."
„Because I am a machine-„
„Then why are you acting human?"
Silence fills the space around us, and I am tempted to look at the two men to see their priceless facial expressions, but I opt to not.
„Look Connor, I saw you doing that creepy ass report thing to Cyberlife. When you woke up.. you seemed troubled. Is something going on?"
„No, Lieutenant. I am allowed to protect my coworkers. As I told y/n, I am replaceable. You two are not, the situation really isn't that deep."
„Okay, Connor. I believe you." Hanks tone turns serious, melancholy. „I just want you to understand yourself, and why we are reacting to these things the way we do."
Another moment of silence passes before Connor speaks up, „Didn't she say something about her car having problems?"
„Yeah, a flat tire."
„Should we like.. help her fix that?"
I chuckle a little to myself, and they look over. I quickly straighten out my smile, heat being brought to my face. I put my hand around my jaw, and after them studying me for a moment, they turn back to their conversation.
„Are we supposed to just show up at her house?"
„Yeah, why not?"
„Connor, that is creepy as hell. Ill give her money to buy cabs for a couple days, how about that?"
I hear Connor let out a sigh of approval, before he slowly trots back to his desk. I sneak a glance up their way, and I swear Hank makes eye contact with me for a moment, smiling to himself before going back to shoving his head into his monitor.
I decide to get up and go to our little lobby section and make myself a cup of coffee, considering I know how much more work I have piled up on my desk. I get up from my chair, the wheels squeaking slightly. Connors eyes flicker towards me, hearing the sound, but he quickly returns to what he was doing at his desk before.
I waltz my way up to the counter, and begin making my coffee. As the machine slowly disperses water, I hear footsteps behind me.
