It just showed him that Billy was there for him—no matter what. Steve didn't have to be afraid because Billy was right there. He has proven himself to be an amazing and caring alpha. Steve made a mental note to return the favor sometime soon for his alpha. Steve held his lunch tray unsure of where he should sit now. Since freshman year, he has always sat at the same table in the middle of the cafeteria. It was always with Tommy, Carol, and a few others from his clique.

But that's no longer the case. He didn't want to sit with them anymore. He never realized it before but Tommy and Carol and everyone else in the popular crowd were toxic and fake as fuck. But at least he saw their true colors now, so better late than never, he figured.

Steve would have continued standing around like an idiot if it wasn't for Billy's hand on his lower back guiding him to an empty table far away from Tommy and the others. Sitting down together, Steve turned a bit to look at Billy. "Why're you sitting with me? You could be sitting with them." He nudged his chin at Tommy's table.

Billy scoffed before giving Steve a look with a single brow raised. "You can't be fucking serious, Bambi? You really think I wanna sit with those dumbasses?"

Yeah. That was probably a stupid thing to ask. Steve chewed on his bottom lip and rested his cheek against his knuckles to stare at the blonde. "I don't know...you're the "new king" of Hawkins. Everyone's gonna be looking to you now. You're the top dog of this school." Steve couldn't help but roll his eyes at that. He was still standing by his statement—Billy could have the crown and the throne. Steve didn't care about that stupid title anymore. It meant so little to him now, especially after everything he's been through last year.

Billy chuckled and popped a couple of fries in his mouth before speaking with his mouth full. "I didn't ask to be "king" of this shithole. But...since I am "king" now. I can't exactly run this crappy school without a queen." The alpha swallowed his fries and turned his head to flash Steve a charismatic grin showcasing his sharp canines.

Steve chuckled and scooted closer to steal one of Billy's fries off his tray. "Billy Hargrove, are you asking me to be your "queen"?" He couldn't help but bat his long eyelashes at the other male.

Billy let out a short laugh that made Steve's heart flutter at the sound. Now that he's thought about it. He's never heard Billy laugh before. The alpha was always so doom and gloom about everything and everyone. He always had a scowl on his handsome face, so it was nice to see him smile or laugh for a change. "Oh, trust me, sweetheart. You're a princess and a fucking queen. And you deserved to be treated like one." Billy wrapped his strong arm around Steve's lithe waist and gently pulled him closer.

Steve practically purred at being held so close to Billy's side. He leaned in to nuzzle his nose against the alpha's scent gland. He inhaled his intoxicating scent in greedy gulps. He could feel his body relaxing. "Mmm...I meant what I said yesterday, Billy. I do feel safe with you. So...thank you." Steve moved to rest the side of his head on Billy's broad shoulder.

The alpha hummed, giving Steve's hip a gentle squeeze. "You don't need to thank me, princess."

As the agonizing hours passed, it was finally time for basketball practice. Steve held the strap of his duffel bag but stopped when he spotted Nancy waiting for him at the front doors of the gym. His entire being froze and he swallowed the hard lump in his throat. Shit. He really, really didn't want to deal with this—he didn't want to deal with Nancy. Damn it. Why did she have to show up? Why couldn't she just leave him alone? What could she possibly want?

If she was here to apologize, Steve didn't want to hear it. He didn't want to hear her excuses. God, it felt like his heart was shattering all over again. Wiping his sweaty palms on his jeans, he summoned up the courage to walk up to her. The minute their eyes met, Nancy had a small smile on her lips. "Hey." She spoke softly.

Steve pulled his bottom lip between his teeth to control his emotions. "What do you want, Nancy?" He wasn't here for formalities, he was cutting right to the fucking chase.

Sensing his impatience and bitterness that mixed into his scent, Nancy sucked in her lips and held her hands in front of her. "Listen, Steve, I...I'm sorry about what happened. I just..."

"You're sorry?" Steve scoffed and shook his head. "Seriously? You came here to apologize? I don't want your apology, Nancy." Taking a bold step forward, Steve narrowed his eyes down at her. "We're not friends. We're not together. We're done. You made that very clear at Tina's party. I have nothing to say to you." He could feel the angry tears pricking at his eyes and the hurt bubbling in his chest again.

Just as Nancy's lips parted to speak, Steve brushed past her to head inside the gym. He was done with this. All he wanted to do right now was focus on practice and play some basketball—the one thing he was good at. Thankfully, the rest of the team was already out on the court when he entered the locker room. He forcefully slammed his bag down on the bench a little too hard. Letting out a trembling exhale, Steve changed into a pair of gym shorts and a gray t-shirt.

He was in the midst of rolling up his socks when the locker room door opened and then slammed closed with a loud bang. The sound made Steve jump. Just from the outraged scent, he could tell it was Billy. The blonde exhaled heavily through his flared nose and made his way over to Steve. "I swear to God, I'm gonna—" He stopped and immediately frowned. He must have sensed the anxiety in Steve's usual flower-petal scent. "Omega. What's wrong?"

How is it that Billy was always the first one to ask him what's wrong? How is it that he is always able to spot Steve's worry? He really was a good alpha. Steve finished rolling his socks up and forced a smile in Billy's direction. "Nothing, I'm fine."

Billy's eyebrows furrowed and his stormy blue eyes narrowed. He didn't like that answer. The blonde walked over to Steve and stood in front of him. "Princess, I can practically smell the anxiety. What happened?"

Well, damn. He couldn't fool Billy, could he? "Look, Billy. We can talk about this later, okay? I really don't wanna talk about this right now. Please?"

The alpha's jaw tensed but he nodded in understanding. Thank God. "Is...everything okay with you? You sounded pretty pissed off." Steve bit his bottom lip and fidgeted with his fingers.

Billy clicked his tongue and ran a hand down his face. He moved to sit down on the bench. "Fuckin' Tommy was pissing me off. Stupid beta. I swear, one of these days I'm gonna kick his teeth down his throat." Billy's scent bristled again before he inhaled and exhaled deeply. He was trying his best to control his anger.

Steve frowned and moved to stand between Billy's legs. He placed his hands on the blonde's shoulders. Billy calmed down somewhat and wrapped his muscular arms around Steve's waist. "He was...saying dumb shit about you...about us. You have no idea how hard I had to control myself so I don't...beat the shit out of him with that damn basketball." Billy shook his head and growled. "These fuckin' people. They act like they know me...they don't know shit about me."

Steve listened patiently and cupped Billy's cheeks. He soothingly brushed the pads of his thumbs over the alpha's cheekbones. He knew where Billy was coming from. Everyone acted as if they knew Steve—but in reality, they didn't know him. They all have no idea what he's been through. Even during his childhood, nobody knew and even if they did, nobody would care. He's been through so much over the years from childhood all the way up until now.

And Tommy...well, Tommy was always a piece of shit and would continue to be. There was nothing special about that beta anyway. Steve carded his fingers through Billy's slightly sweaty curls and nodded. "Trust me, I get it. I know what that feels like. Everyone...thinks they know everything about you, but...they don't know shit. And with Tommy...don't let him get to you, okay? He's a total weasel. He's a spineless beta. He doesn't know us." Steve smiled softly when Billy tugged him closer.

The alpha rested his forehead against Steve's stomach. "He doesn't know us." Billy quietly reiterated to himself.
