Her mind was in haze when she walked inside. The door closed behind her, leaving her alone in her mind. Her legs took her to the staircase. She stumbled but ended up sitting on the steps. She dared to look up around the living room but gasped next second as flashes of past started blurring her eyes. Cold sweat broke out across her forehead.
For more than a decade, she spent running away but look at her, she was back where everything started. Destiny dragged her back to square one.
She took a deep breath and sighed. A familiar phrase coming out with the breathy exhale,"Home sweet home." Her voice withered just like her soul while the words escaped her lips. She felt intense pain filling her chest.
Shaking her head, she scrambled towards the switch. With just a flick, a big and yellow light brightened the whole room.Only few furnitures were left and even they were covered with plastics and clothes.
She went towards a window and with a beating heart she opened it. Warm breeze of evening hit her face. Her suffocating lungs felt little relief. Her hands indulged in a motor routine of opening all the windows almost in a trance to resist the panic filling her mind. During that, she hit the back of her hand hard on a corner.
Physical pain climbed upon her nerves, making her forearm and wrist immobile for a while. Clutching her hand to her chest, she crouched down on the ground. The pain was unbearable.
Her lips parted in a silent scream and eyes closed to retain the barrier between the world and her tears. She wished to hide it again. Hide it somewhere where no one can find that vulnerability of hers, not even herself. She wished to forget each ounce of living nightmare she saw and every stab of agony she felt.
The guilty voice of Vasudha echoed in her ears, "Lado, I never thought to bring it up again. I thought, it is better forgotten."
"Tell me everything, Kaki hukum. I wish to know everything. I beg you, please tell me.", at that time Raina could not fathom that something else was left to be known by her. She thought everything was crystal clear, no more secrets, no more shocks, no more pain. Oh! How wrong she was.
"Your uncle was outraged when he came to knew that another heir of Raghav and Naina was on the way. Most probably, a boy. He had a hope that he can kick you out of the property once you are grown up and married. But a boy who would have been a man and a true heir of his father in the eyes of everyone was a danger for him. He could have his risk with a daughter of Raghav but not the son was to be the rightful one to carry the legacy of his father in the eyes of society."
Who knew a peaceful day with her husband and a quick visit to her mother in law would change the dynamics of her life.
"At that same time, Sarvesh Raval took him in his wings and instigated the whole.....murder."
She fell on the ground and broke in sobs. The wound which was healing was ripped open once again, the gash bleeding like anything.
She suffered the loss of something she never had and it did not make it less painful in any way.
