(Spy's POV)
I stood at the window with my hand pressed to it, feeling the vibration of the rain falling onto my palm.
Merde. Not this again.
The sound of a baby crying was heard behind me, and I turned around, seeing my girlfriend and her son in her arms. Well, my son.
"Darling, are you sure you have to leave?"
I pressed my hand against her cheek, and she leaned into it.
"I wish I didn't, ma petite chou-fleur, but it's for your safety..."
I gently placed my hand upon the swaddled infant in her arms.
"...and for his."
"At least hold him one last time before you go, please."
I nodded, picking up the child who had stopped crying.
It's getting more vivid every time.
"Jeremy Pierre Charleston, I will miss you, but this is for your own good, mon fils."
He babbled, almost as if he could understand me, but wasn't sure how to react.
I sighed.
"The life of a mercenary is too dangerous. I'd rather you two not be affiliated with me. I couldn't handle it if you were hurt."
I handed Jeremy back to his mother before kissing her on the cheek. She pulled me into a gentle embrace, sobbing quietly, as a couple tears slid down my cheek.
I headed towards the door with my packed bag before stopping short of the front door and waving goodbye.
She waved goodbye as well, and picked up Jeremy's little hand, making him wave back to me too.
Please, make it end... I hate this...
I smiled gently and left the house, feeling my suit get drenched with rain.
About 25 years later, we got news that our Scout class teammate was retiring. He was a sweet upbeat man from Costa Rica who had stories to tell and a gleam in his eye. He had filed for retirement because his wife was pregnant and he wanted to spend more time with her, and build a family. The other team, including me, wished him well and said goodbye.
The others buzzed with excitement, wondering who our new Scout class teammate would be.
I hope he'll forgive me...
The day when we would meet him came, and everyone was ecstatic, waiting for the moment he would walk through the door.
When he did, though, my heart sank.
Blue eyes, just like his mother, but the body structure and jawline of his father. Pale brown hair and a sharp chin.
I knew him all too well.
My son.
I wasn't sure how to react. How could his mother let him take on this dangerous job? So I reacted on instinct.
I narrowed my eyes and flared my nostrils, bringing down my eyebrows. Everyone flocked around the new Scout. Everyone except me.
He turned to face me and I saw the hurt in his eyes. I know what he was probably thinking. 'Why does he hate me? I just got here!' But he's wrong.
I could never hate him.
I just want him to quit.
So I acted like that every day, while secretly being proud of his achievements. I teased him and insulted him, so that he would leave, but it never worked.
I hated that my son was put in such a dangerous position.
"Spy?"
Hold on, this isn't part of the normal flashback.
"Spy, are you okay?"
I don't remember this.
I snapped back to reality, looking at (Y/N). She looked at me with concern in her eyes.
"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for asking, mon ami."
She nodded and turned back to her breakfast.
I wonder if she knows?
