I didn't stay for notes. How could I? I asked Matthew to give them to me digitally, maybe in the form of a text or email. He obliged, but I think he was a little suspicious about it. I had never, never before missed notes, and I promised him it would never happen again, telling him that a crisis had come up and that I just needed to take care of it.
Finally out of my costume, I walked back to my dressing room, a little bit afraid that I would open the doors and chaos would have unfolded. But, nonetheless, I flung open the door to see that the mercs had found a deck of cards somewhere and were playing cards quietly.
I sat down in a chair and inhaled deeply.
"So, as I was saying, you guys... don't exist here. Or, you shouldn't exist here. Um... but you guys are famous... kinda... you guys are... characters here. Most people know who you are, but if they see you in public, they may, like, freak out or something."
Scout gestured to everyone else in the room.
"So, we're, like, cartoon characters?"
I winced. I forgot that they were from the late 1960s. Of course they wouldn't know what a video game was!
"Um, kinda. It's... a little hard to explain... but not my point. The point is, if you guys need somewhere to stay, you can stay with me. You guys are... in a different time, too. A very different time."
Soldier cocked his head to the side before asking, "So, what year is it?"
I inhaled deeply again.
"2023."
I could hear Spy almost choke on his cigarette. Sniper actually looked up at me, and everyone else gasped or reacted in surprise in some way.
"Do you guys have flying cars?" Soldier asked excitedly.
I shook my head.
"Not yet. Maybe one day."
Engineer lept from his seat. It was almost comical.
"Men, seeing as we're in a much different time, and..."
He stopped and turned to me.
"What's your name, darlin'?"
"Oh. (Y/N)."
He smiled and turned back to everyone else.
"And Miss (Y/N) knows her way around this world, and has been nothin' but kind to us, I reckon we ought to stay with her. We'd never be able to find our way around this new place. So, who's with me?"
Everyone murmured agreements to each other. Engineer's face lit up.
"Okay then. I've got room in my car. We'll head over to my place."
Everyone started to get up and grab their weapons, but then I remembered something.
"Just... try to keep a low profile. Please. I don't think that people will be very ecstatic to see nine armed men."
They all nodded collectively, looking around for a way to conceal the larger weapons, finally finding baskets to put the larger guns in and placing unit canvases over them.
I was glad I got that van. It was originally used for helping move set pieces, but it wasn't being used right now, so I could carry both the weapons and the mercs. Double win. Of course, it is a little strange driving a white van around town...
We moved outside, some men carrying baskets, others just walking along. I felt the stares of others, so I started talking at the top of my lungs.
"Thanks again for helping me with the set, guys! And once again, may I just say, your costumes are amazing!"
