Chapter Forty-Nine: Plot

Autumn sat on the windowsill of her apartment, one leg tucked under her, the other dangling lazily as the city evening stretched itself in muted tones of amber and indigo. The air smelled faintly of rain, clean, earthy, and promising. She wrapped her fingers around the rim of her mug, lukewarm tea inside, as Alastair leaned against the opposite wall, his arms crossed. There was a weight in the air, not unpleasant, but filled with an anticipation she couldn't quite name.

He broke the silence first.
"I've been thinking," he said, voice low, deliberate, the kind of voice that made her look up.

She tilted her head, studying him. "That usually means trouble."

The corner of his mouth tugged into the faintest smile, but his eyes remained serious. "I want us to move. Not just move, start over. I'm selling the old mansion."

Autumn blinked, caught between surprise and a swirl of memories. That mansion wasn't just a house; it was their wedding home, a space of opulence, shadows, and pain. Her brows arched softly. "The one we lived in... after the wedding?"

He nodded, pushing off the wall to close the distance a little, though not too close—he still measured his steps around her, careful of invisible boundaries. "Yes. That one. I don't want us there anymore. Too many ghosts in those walls. I want a new home. Something we choose together. Something built for us—not inherited, not forced."

Her fingers tightened around the mug. Part of her heart soared at his words, another part whispered its habitual caution. "You already have something in mind, don't you?" she asked, watching him with eyes that had grown used to reading between the lines of Alastair's intentions.

The evening breeze sneaked through the half-open window, teasing strands of her hair, making them dance against her cheek.

He leaned against the edge of her small kitchen table now, shoulders squared but voice softer. "There's a plot I've been eyeing. Coastal, about a hundred acres. Space for gardens, space for Ace to grow up without walls pressing in. A place that feels like freedom." His eyes flickered with quiet excitement before he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "The seller is... difficult."

"Difficult how?" she asked, already sensing there was more to it.

"Four billion for the plot." His laugh was humorless, but he shook his head. "It's ridiculous, but it's Aramis."

Autumn's eyes widened slightly. "Aramis?" The name stirred memories, sharp and vivid. Nights of fear, but also resilience. "Your friend... your business partner."

"Yes," Alastair said, his gaze questioning. "How do you..."

"I met him. Back then. When I was protecting you." She looked down at her tea for a moment, the surface trembling faintly from her unsteady fingers. "We crossed paths. He wasn't cruel, but he wasn't easy either."

Alastair watched her carefully, as though cataloging every flicker of expression on her face. After a pause, he nodded. "If you spoke to him, maybe you can again. You've always had a way of seeing through people. He respects strength."

Autumn exhaled, a small laugh escaping her despite the tension. "So now I'm your negotiator?"

A smile ghosted over his lips. "My partner. That's what I meant."

The word partner settled between them like a fragile gift. She glanced at him, and though her eyes still held shadows, there was also warmth—uncertain, but present.

The next morning, the drive to meet Aramis was a quiet one. Ace had been left in Richard and Sophia's care, and for once the car felt like a cocoon just for the two of them. Autumn sat with her hand brushing absentmindedly against the leather of the seat, eyes tracing the blur of sea cliffs as the road wound closer to the coast.
