chapter ten . . . close the gate

JOSIE SLOWLY GAINED CONSCIOUSNESS, the sound of talking reached her ears but came through echoed around her as she blinked in confusion, trying to recognise her surroundings. The sudden throbbing pain in her cheek caused her to grunt at the ache, catching the attention of her younger brother, who held her head in his lap.

"She's awake!" Dustin announced.

"Guys?" Josie moaned, making a move to sit up, "Where are we?"

"Sticking to our plan." Mike answered, her brows furrowing at the gasoline container held in his lap. Despite Steve's long scolding to the group about how their plan was dangerous and could potentially kill them all, they all ignored every word that they had heard and were now driving in search for the tunnels to set it on fire.

"No, guys." Josie winced as she moved her mouth to talk, "This is crazy— is anyone else's ears ringing right now?"

"You have a concussion, Josie." Dustin tried to console her, grabbing an ice pack and shoving it onto her face. "Here."

Pushing the object away, Josie closed her eyes trying to push back the headache that was slowly forming. "Are we in a car? Who is even driving?" She opened her eyes at the lack of reply from her brother and Mike, now directing her attention to the front seats.

"—Then you take a right just here." Lucas said quietly, promptly checking the backseat to make sure the older girl wasn't aware of a 13-year-old girl was driving a vehicle, however he was greeted by Josie's widened eyes set on Max.

"Jose, don't freak out." Dustin grabbed her shoulder to settle her back down.

"Holy shit." The girl felt nauseous, her hands immediately clutching over her mouth. "This isn't happening. Oh, God."

"Calm down, go back to sleep." Mike hushed her.

Incoherent mumbling spewed from Steve's mouth as he was now only beginning to wake up. The first thing coming into vision when he opened his eyes was the curly haired girl, sat up with her head in her hands. "Josie?" He called out.

The sound of her name from the boy caused her to snap her head over at him, taking note of the mixture of blood and blue and purple blemishes over his skin from the bruises forming on his face. "Steve." She breathed out in relief, taking the ice pack out of Mike's hand and taking over to hold it to Steve's head instead and cupping his cheek softly, making sure not to make contact with any wounds.
