chapter eight .  .  . gone

AFTER EVERYONE HAD PILED into the house, all huddled in a circle now intently listening to Mike explaining what the Upside Down was so that everyone was on the same page. "Okay, so, in this example, we're the acrobat." He pointed to the stick man drawn onto the sheet of paper he held up. "Will and Barbara, and that monster, they're this flea. And this is the upside down where Will is hiding. Mr. Clarke said the only way to get there is through a rip of time and space."

"A gate." Dustin added.

"That we tracked to Hawkins lab."

"With our compasses." Everyone stayed silent, nothing but confusion still drawn on their faces causing Dustin to explain further. "Okay, so the gate has a really strong electromagnetic field, and that can change the directions of a compass needle."

"Is this gate underground?" Hopper questioned.

"Yes." Eleven softly replied.

"Near a large water tank?"

"Yes." The young girl repeated.

Dustin looked at the Chief in wonder, "How do you know all that?" He stammered.

"He's seen it."

Joyce leaned forward, "Is there any way that you could...that you could reach Will? That you could talk to him in this-"

"The Upside Down." Eleven nodded.

"And our friend Barbara? Can you find her, too?" Nancy asked, her eyes filled with hope.

Josie, realising that Eleven had no idea of what Barb looked like, took out the tattered picture Jonathan had taken from her backpack and placed it right in front of her. "Here. This is what she looks like." She gave a small, encouraging smile to El.

Eleven closed her eyes, mustering all her focus on the task at hand. Josie felt Nancy nervously glance her way, grabbing at her hand as the two girls' watched El anxiously as the lights around them flickered for a second. This could end up in celebration or in complete disappointment.

The static from the radio became faint as Eleven flickered her eyes open, taking a deep breath with a solemn look on her face. Her lip quivered as she whispered out, "I'm sorry. I can't find them." Her voice broke causing Josie to cast her eyes down at the table, all hope for finding her friend going down the drain.
