Strings attached 💔

You tied a string around my heart, So that it wouldn't drift away,
As we soared above the trees,
Watching our kingdom turn to day, You were the bravest tin-foil knight, Our cardboard world had ever seen, And with a crown of twisted clovers, I was the impish forest queen,
We scratched our names across the skyline,
Playing hopscotch on the stars,
Collecting drops of golden sunlight,
In our treasured crystal jars, And I thought we'd live forever, In the kingdom that we owned, Still dancing with its trees, Even after we had grown,
But I learnt there's no forever, So much magic cannot last,
When you ripped your tin-foil armour, And crammed it all into your past, I clung onto that kingdom,
Until my arms were numb with pain, But cardboard worlds grow soggy, When they're left out in the rain, Though it's been years since I left it,
Around my heart that string's still wound, But now I'm just stuck in the real world, With a wilted clover crown.
