A Delirium Poem

I’m walking in the woods

Next to 37 Brooks

The sky is a shade away from black

I’d be braver if I had Tack

But then laughter fills the air

And gone is my despair

My ears perk up and listen

Oh! What a beautiful sound I’m smitten

“Should I risk looking for the source?”

The voice in my head yells until it grows hoarse

I’ve been waiting for a day like this to come by

Surely, I’m not going to just let it fly

Taking in a deep breath

I walk around the corner with stealth

What I see is a beautiful sight indeed

A boy and a girl lying down on the weed

They must be fools

For nobody ever defies the rules

But their smiles are so bright

They could easily turn this darkness into light

The love between them is so palpable

It makes the concept of Deliria oh so laughable

Why would anyone want to give a cure

To something so striking, so intense … so pure?

And then he does the unthinkable:

He holds her tight like she’s something breakable

The warmth radiates from him like rays of sunshine

Covering her, protecting her, whispering to her “You’re mine”

Something tugs at my heart

And I look down at it with a start

Is that compassion that I’m feeling?

I believe I should be seething

But their love has awoken something I thought long gone

It’s like a new day; it’s like a new dawn

Then the silence is broken

The gunshots have spoken

A look of fear crosses both their eyes

They’re not ready yet to say their good-byes

They have committed an awful crime

And they know they haven’t got enough time

The boy then takes the girl by the hands

And he quietly makes a demand

But the girl refuses and shakes her head severely

And from her eyes the tears escape freely

The boy leans in and kisses them away

“Don’t worry,” he whispers, “we will meet someday”

Then he lets go and urges her to run

She turns away but not before seeing the gun

Pointed at the boy’s chest

Who doesn’t do anything, not even protest

She looks at his eyes for one final time

They shine so bright, just like a dime

Then she runs like the boy told her to

Where to go, she doesn’t have clue

How could something so beautiful be forbidden?

My heart bleeds; it feels like I’ve been bitten

But I still have hope that the lovers will meet once more

For a love like this can surpass anything, even the deadliest of wars
