School Parking Lot – Day
[Sam pulls into the school parking lot in his car. His license plate reads "glee." He exits the car and walks toward the school. Jasmine approaches and walks alongside him.]
Jasmine: Mr. Evans!
Sam: Yeah?
Jasmine: I went to the library and I got some sheet music, and I wanted to run some songs by you that feature me heavily on lead vocal.
Sam: Thanks, Jas, but I already got one picked out.
[Rafael appears at Jasmine's side, reaching out to wheel her schoolbag for her. Sam falls behind.]
Rafael: Let me help you with that.
Jasmine: Thanks, Rafael. You're so chivalrous.
Rafael: Thanks. That's a good thing, right?
[Sam moves to walk alongside Tayla, Kevin, and Madison.]
Sam: Morning, guys.
Tayla: Hey, Mr. Evans. We're just learning some runs.
Sam: Oh, yeah?
Tayla: So it goes- (vocalizing)
Sam, Madison, and Kevin: (vocalizing)
Sam: With the finger, huh?
Tayla: Pretty fly for a white guy.
Sam: Oh, thank you, thank you. Hey, don't be late for rehearsal this afternoon.
Tayla: Okay.
Sam: All right.
[Sam separates from the three and continues walking toward the school. Auzzy, Finley, and five male students in letterman jackets are standing in front of the dumpster. Auzzy has his arm around Finley.]
Sam: Morning, Finley.
Auzzy: Buenos nachos, Mr. Evans.
[Finley watches Sam pass with apprehension.]
Sam: (chuckling) Hey! Let's go Titans.
Auzzy: Yeah. (To Finley) Come on.
Finley: Wait.
[Finley throws his bag into the arms of a jock.]
Finley: One day, you will all work for me.
[Auzzy and another student lift Finley and toss him into the dumpster.]
School Hallway – Day
[Sam walks down the hall and turns to address a student.]
Sam: Danielle, thank you so much for that apple. It was very, very nice of you. All right? (chuckles)
[Mercedes stands at the top of the stairs, looking at her watch before rounding the corner. She approaches Sam as he walks toward her with his head down, and they collide.]
Sam: Oh!
Mercedes: (gasping) Oh, Sam! Oh, gosh.
Sam: Hey, Mercedes.
Mercedes: Hi.
Sam: Hey. I wanted to thank you so much for the advice you gave me the other day. I mean, teaching here and coaching Glee Club – It's where I belong.
Mercedes: Oh, it's no problem. I mean, it's what I do. You know, I give counsel and give guidance. I'm a guidance counselor.
Sam: Yeah, you are.
