"It wasn't supposed to end like that." A voice echoed through the dark alley. "You can't go yet! Wake up!" The voice spoke through shaking as the boy held the lifeless body against his. His hands over the stab wound that the body had trying to stop the blood but it was clear the the body had stopped bleeding and the person was long gone. They didn't even have color to their skin anymore as their eyes was cloudy but the boy was still trying desperately to save this person. Footsteps echoed down the alley disturbing the puddles, causing the boy to turn his head to see a figure walking toward him. They had a lantern glowing dimly showing their pale skin and bony facial structure that had hair falling right below their cheekbones. There was a slight thumping from the staff that seemed just barely taller than the person. The staff's top hooked over in a rugged spiral and had a bundle of jewels that dangled catching the dim light of the lantern every now and again. The base of the staff looked crooked where the figure's long bony fingers curled around. It seemed like it had been washed out of all its life years ago but it wasn't splintering and instead it was just like it was carved out of the middle of the tree. The boy panicked as he tried to pull the lifeless body closer and drag them away from the approaching figure. "No! No! Go away!" He sobbed as he stopped trying to move away as there was no other way out of the alley. It was a dead end. There was no way out from where he currently was unless he pushed past the figure but even in he couldn't take the body with him it was just dead weight, literally.
The figure stopped in front of the two looking down at the two kids at was at their feet now. "He's not going to wake up." The person spoke out, their voice emotionless and quiet. "I've come for him. It's his time to go." The jewel started to glow starting from a dim red to an intense crimson red. The boy sobbing just stared up at the figure who's cold shadows started to fight with the warm red glow above them. "No! I can't let you have him! I was supposed to protect him! It's not his time! Who even are you?! You don't have the right to take him away from me! He's going to wake up! Leave us alone!" The boy sobbed out desperately as the figure just stared blankly, showing no remorse or pity. "Foolish humans can never understand the truth. That's why I hate dealing with humans who have another human attached to them. He's dead. You failed your 'job'." They muttered under their breath, harshly, showing no sign of sympathy, as a pale blue spirit started to leave from the body that the boy was still desperately trying to protect. The boy looked as the spirit seeped out of the body and his face paled. "It wasn't his time! Stop!" He pleaded as he started to reach up for the soul though it was to no avail. The soul just passed right through his fingers making him more desperate to grab something that he couldn't grab. Within moments the soul got trapped between the jewels and they slowly dimmed out. The figure turned on their heels and started to make their way out of the alley leaving the boy in his own fear and desperation to get answers.
The figure disappeared by the end of the alley just becoming nothing in the air.

The sound of wings flapping had caused the figure to look up as they had walked out of the alley. The soft glow cause the figure to cringe as they looked back ahead not trying to focus on the angel coming down at them. The angel slightly stumbled from his landing as he never had the cleanest of landings but he tried to play it off as if he didn't about eat the curb. "Damn it, you already got him." He huffed out being out of breath as he put his hands on his hips. His build was more muscular compared to the other and his skin was more tanned. He was almost five inches shorter though and he clearly just started up at the other with big blue eyes. The figure glared down at the angel with cold yellow eyes as they started to walk down the side walk. "Angel's shouldn't be cussing." They spoke out as they caused their lantern to just vanish into nothing.
The angel brushed his golden hair out of his eyes as he rolled his eyes. "It's not like God is listening to everything I say. Plus you was supposed to wait for at least the guardian angel of the human before you take their soul and you know that, so I'm not the only one breaking the 'rules'. You should loosen up you look so tense every time I see you and you always seem to have something holding you back." He muttered out as he crossed his arms over his chest. It wasn't the first time that the angel had always made slip ups like that and he had ran into this angel of death every now and again and it was a known fact that the angel was so close onto just losing his title as a guardian angel. He was balancing on the line of becoming a fallen angel as he would have been forced to fall from grace.
The angel of death just rolled their eyes as the soft tapping of their staff on the ground as it had helped him walk. He had messed up his leg in their past life, they was very limited to what they could have fixed. They had even a scar on their temple that had caused a streak of their hair to grow white which had contrasted against their midnight hair but they wasn't too bothered with it. "I waited. It took you 20 minutes to get here. He was dead. I'm just trying to do my job. Unlike you." They spoke out harshly and coldly as they kept making their way to their next soul to take.
The shorter male huffed as he threw his hands up in frustration. "Okay maybe I was a but! I had.. I had things going on so you're rushing things!" He spoke out in a rush as he tried to excuse his reason for being late though he knew he shouldn't have been late for any reason. It was his job to go the people he was supposed to protect to make sure that they didn't die too soon from their time. They shouldn't have been there to there to take their souls too soon and they wanted to make sure that the angel was there to make sure they didn't go in fear. "I'm gonna guess that you're going to go off on your next job but I want to know your name. I run into you so much and I don't even know what to call you." He spoke out questioning the person as he quickly tried to keep up with them.
"It doesn't matter. I'm just an angel of death who does their job." They hushed out before slowly starting to speed up.
"Oh come on. Can I please just get your name at least? I just need to know who's the one trying to get my souls." He huffed out crossing his arms over his chest again.
"Azrael."
"Well it's nice to know that some pretty boy with a pretty boy name is taking away my job." He teased before putting his hands on his hips. "I'm Lucian."
"God wasn't very giving with that name for you was he?" They spoke out, having one last say before they had vanished just like they had did with their lantern.
Lucian smiled and it had lit up his face like any expression did and he chuckled as he watched Azrael just vanish. "I guess he wasn't." He sighed, though he knew he wouldn't have been heard, before he chewed his lip a bit. He knew he was going to go back to heaven without anything to say and he would have gotten in trouble for letting another soul get taken away way sooner than they should have gone. He knew that he was getting closer and closer to having his wings and halo ripped away from him. He didn't want to go Earth and have to start all over without the chance of becoming an angel again. He loved his job but he just didn't take it that seriously compared to the other angels in his area. He sprouted his wings and started to fly up above as he thought about the excuses to make what while he told God why another on had gotten away.

Ending notes:
This is a short start to this story. The updates are going to be slow because of personal issues and work and school. This was a start of a school project and I decided to write more about them as I fell in love with the characters that I had I put into the short story and I had friends say that I should make it into a longer story so here I am.
