"Disengage yourself from my family."
I am not worried of them. I am worried for you."
He wants it to have a double lock.
"Bakit?" usisa ko. "Ano ba ang mayroon sa pamilya niyo? Bukod sa mayaman kayo, ano pa?"
"Sila," he corrected me. "I'm not part of the family anymore."
Did he mean as in completely? He will never see them, deal with them or engage with them even in simple ways?
"You know the saying, Money is the root of all evil?" He glanced at me while still fixing the lock. "There's evil and secrets where money is. There's a deep reason why I cut ties with them."
"Anong dahilan?"
"I'm not sure yet." He suddenly talked again. "The three generations before us hold so many secrets. They are messy. There's nothing good in staying in a messy family ruled by power and money."
I want to love you without boundaries, Ammy. I just want a peaceful life with you."
"Yes. I am sure." He left the door as he already finished installing the new lock.
He put the glass down on the kitchen island where my back is resting.
"You promised to marry me, didn't you?" Hinawakan niya ang baba ko. "I still have your ring so . . . there's no way I'll let you break your vow."
"Even if you didn't come back to me, I will come back to you, Ameliah."
"I'm afraid we'll run out of moves again, Ammy. Kapag kabisado tayo ng kalaban, madali tayong matatalo. I want to save for us. Of course, I don't want you to stoop down my level of living. Just because you love me."
I sighed. "Sanay naman ako sa hirap. Ayos lang sa akin—"
"It's not okay to me. You worked hard for everything you have right now: your job, your name, your life—not only for you to step down to the extent of living I can afford at the moment."
He's back in my life this easy because we still feel the same toward each other. But as fast as he gets back in my life, paano kung mabilis din siyang bawiin sa akin?
"Okay. I'll wait." Hinawakan ko ang pisngi niya.
He gave me a small smile. "You have to do me a favor. Don't meddle with my family business. Promise me this will be the last."
