"Have you ever heard the story of how the sun loves the moon so deeply that he dies every night to let her breathe.

It was very very long time ago. When life is at its youth and time has just begun. There were just the primal spirits who let's the trees grow, the wind blows, the river flows. There was the sun who has shown bright and most powerful of all. And there was the moon who lights the night sky. They have never seen each other as one rules the day, one watches the night.

However, one time, the sun caught a glimpse of the moon that he falls in love with her. One is bright and gold, another is warm and light. They have met as if destiny pulled the strings. And that is where it begins.

Love and power never agree. The two have their own responsibilities. When love and power collides, hatred shall arise. Accursed by fate, an endless cycle begins. Nobody knows when this cycle of love and revenge will end. But one thing remains certain, there will be those who suffer."

Aiden's POV

The wind is cold, the moon is bright. I stood in front of a makeshift grave of piled up rocks almost covered by the grass. It has been long since this was made. A grave. Hers.

The shade of the tree cradles the little resting place. This was the first time I have seen this. This was the first time I returned to this mountain.

"She does not like visitors." A raspy voice came from behind. It was... Duke. He hasn't aged a bit beside from the dark circles under his bloodshot eyes. His hand held a half full bottle of wine with the label torn off; two empty glasses on his other hand.

"She does not like this, either." He said as he continued to walk past me. The scent of alcohol did not go unnoticed. Mixed with some dry and fresh blood on his coat. He, too, lost her. How many years have they been together? I don't know. Guardians have a very long life span. They fought battles, wars, side by side and me? What am I to her? I was only her misery.

He knelt on the grave, picking out the dried leaves. "Protect and fight, get wounded and died, yet we couldn't have a proper... burial for her. What generosity for a guardian." I watched as he poured wine on one glass placing it on the ground. Whispering something in a language I have never heard of before he stood up.

Then... Bloodlust burst in the air. I did not dare move, I don't want to fight and I don't want to defend."I promised to kill you." He said, his voice barely heard. His jaw clenched in his every words. "But it won't bring her back." He stared at me with his eyes glowing red. As if it bleeds with his words. It was not about power but his own agony. His bloodlust slowly dissipates.

"It was me who started it all. And it is me who should bear this pain. So," He poured another glass of wine and held it out to me which I took. "be a guardian or blame yourself. I don't care anymore." He clinked my glass with his bottle and started to head out.

"But don't look for me. I, too, don't know. Guardians suffer and perish," He smirked, staring at the moon. "Cursed and broken, what is more to love?" He raised his bottle and started drinking from it. Slowly vanishing from my sight.

Cursed. She mentioned something about a curse. Was I the curse? Or being a guardian is? I searched for Duke for how many years. But he vanished since that day. The King remained the king and the treaty with the vampires is still unbroken. However, the relationship between the two kinds has gone cold. No one dared to make any move. Vampires do not have a king, and Duke has been gone. Me? I am not a guardian. But if guardians are cursed then I deserved to be one. For I am who killed her.

But what is a guardian? It must not be that simple. She did not just die because I happened to her. There must be something else, right?

I want to ask Duke why I am a guardian, why he is and why was her. What are guardians? Why do we have to be? But there is no answer. All I know is from that day, something has changed.I stared at my glass slowly turning to ice. Guardians are powerful and strong. But... my sight focused once again to her grave. Guardians suffer.
